Rolex green stripe box
Hello all,
can anyone tell me with certainty when these boxes with reference 06.00.06 were first shipped? Possibly also with which models? I am curious if someone knows more specific. My 1655 was probably sold with this box. Many greetings Alex |

Picture’s not very clear, but that green stripe outer box looks very suspiciously clean. And then inner box is a much later example.

I had to reduce the size of the picture so I could post it. That's why the outer box looks so clear , in fact it is in good condition but old.
The box was definitely shipped that way too. Know another example from a sure first time buyer. He bought his 1655 in 1979 in such a box with green white outer box. |

I don’t line who your other first time buyer is, but green stripe boxes were much earlier than 1979. There were several iterations of boxes by that point (blue shell, crater, seahorse, plus two types of Bufkor boxes). And that inner box didn’t come along until later.

I know. There is this color combination of the outer box also for the coffin boxes for example. These date much earlier. Also have different dimensions. This box-case combination is smaller and so also authentic.
I would only be interested when this version was first delivered. Maybe someone knows something. |

"Certainty" is a big word for Vintage Rolex, but I beileve the 06.00.06 started early 70' till the 80'
There are many box dedicated to the 1655 during the production (1971-1984) so it depends on the year |

I know of no one that considers that box correct for 1979. I would go with the oyster/clam shell box for 1979 for locations outside the USA.

Alex, this is late seventies for us in Europe, though boxes are never something one can be sure of.
But on these 2 of mine, despite the different part numbers, both have the same pad type to hold the watch in place, not like the later you've shown us. |

Remember the boxes were held in a separate room at dealers and tbh they often just located one that was closest the door ! Have to say 1979 though is very late as the clam shell/crater outer is about and even the 1971 (source Giles @ Oakleigh) introduced Sea Horse ones might still be in a dealer stock. The latest clam shell/crater outer with its sticker on end of box also that I've seen on a full punched set is a UK 'Harrods' 14060 Sub from 1994! This is interesting too: https://rolexhaven.com/boxes.html

I have a somewhat different perspective than TuRo or Rolexhaven.com regarding the specific era for rolex boxes. The Rolexhaven web site is missing the clam shell box and the world map box from the box production article. The clam shell boxes were used during the late 1970s. The web site rolexhaven does not include them in the article on Rolex boxes. There is a little overlap between the use of the clam shell boxes and the moon crater boxes during the late 1970s. I've never seen or heard where the clam shell boxes were used during the era when the Submariner 14060s were manufactured. The clam shell box also appears to have been been used for a very short time period.
The moon crater box had two variations. At the rolexhaven site, it only depicts the first variation of the moon crater boxes. The first variation can be found during the late 1970s and continued until the early 1980s It had the slotted card on the inside which held the watch. The second variation had the same outer box, but the inner box had a pillow on the inside which held the watch. This second variation was used until the later part of the 1980s. Around 1989, the moon crater box was replaced by the "world map" box which is dark green in color and depicted below in the attached photos. This box had a green watch pillow with a very thin layer of embossed vinyl which was very prone to cracking and flaking off the pillow. It was used until around 1992 when it was replaced by the "granite" finish box that had a tan pillow and pillow wrap and was used for many years with a change to the inner box during the later years of production - where the inner box with the pillow/wrap was replaced with a cuff which held the watch. Attachments: two photos of the "world map" box. one photo of the first variation of the "granite" box with pillow/pillow wrap inner box and the clam shell box.

I got a moon-crater outer box with a 11.00.2 for my 1655 from 1980, but at this point I'm not sure is correct...
