Question about "Service Crystals"
Hey guys,
I'm about to send my 168000 out for service but I had a question for you about Service Crystals. Mine need replaced as it has a couple of nicks on the edge and a decent scratch. Obviously the original crystal did not have the laser crown at 6 o'clock but I'm wondering if it makes any difference if the replacement crystal has one. Are OEM crystals without the engraving readily available to independents? Should I care? Will it have to go to ROLEX in order to get a crystal like the one it originally had? I have no idea about such things and am not sure it even matters. thanks in advance for any enlightenment... |

I would not worry about it. A service crystal has a small S near the etched coronet and is no different from a brand new unit.
If you prefer not to have a service crystal, I am sure you can find an OEM unit here on the classifieds or on the 4 letter auction site |

Around 2009 the service crystals stopped having the "S" in the crown at the 6 position, there may be a few remaining in stock with the "S".

I guess what I'm really asking is whether or not a service crystal or a laser engraved replacement would effect the value or my ability to move the watch. While i have no plans of selling it i just wonder how it would be viewed by a prospective buyer without its original style crystal. If so does anyone have a line on an OEM crystal that would be appropriate for a 198000? I looked in the classifieds but didin't really see anything.

Call a few independents and see if they have one in stock. If not, I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you aren't selling.

That model is not going to depreciate differently due to a service crystal.
Since you're having it serviced, make sure it's by a really good indie watchmaker who is certified, has a parts account and has spectacular ratings from customers. Or use RSC...

I rather have the laser logo than a crystal that maybe not is made by Rolex for sure. The logo will not affect the value of your watch.
