5524G Thoughts

I’m relatively new to the world of
Patek and I think I’m not a typical Patek client... rarely wear suits or shirts with cuffs, more t shirts or sleeves rolled up..
I’m normally comfortable in everything diver-like from Rolex..

Recently bought a 5167R on a bit of a whim (it sang to me where the steel had not)
Am waiting to try on a 5711 but I have a feeling it wont do much for me...

The 5524 on the other hand I think is stunning... love the size, dial colour and design and the travel time features.
Reminds me of my Pam only 100 times nicer...

I was lucky to have had one in my hands on a couple of visits to my AD recently...
The one I’ve seen was reserved and so I couldn’t buy it if I’d wanted.. been told. I can have one in about 12-18 months...
But it’s way above my previous watch purchase costs and I’m not getting VAT back etc.. so I’m cautious to say the least at spending out on about the value of 6 ceramic subs for 1 PM watch..

But I love how it looks and think it would suit my day to day style..
Yeah I know all the issues or criticisms (not steel, only the 3mm thicK movement in a 10mm + case.... 5 times more than a nice IWC or Zenith Pilot...
But still love it.

Couple of questions for owners of this or similar pieces.. Is my AD likely to discount such a piece, especially one that is trading over list on the grey market? I’ve not asked yet as I’m not in the position to buy at present.

Is spending this kind of money (currently 34K GBP) considered a wise investment or is it pretty accepted that there will be an initial drop in value at least for the 1st 5-10 years till new prices rise or models are discontinued?

I’m up to speed on Rolex prices new and used but not sure how the used Patek market is.. also assume it’s a lot easier to find someone to spend 7k on a used sub versus 30k+ on a used Patek (at least privately) so assume this might limit resale especially on such a ‘marmite’ piece.

Thanks
Andrew

5524G is a beautiful piece and to me worth the current MSRP. The demand for the 5524G has decreased but it is unlikely any UK AD will discount on the 5524G as it still sells above MSRP in the grey market and many ADs still have waiting lists.

I think there will be a further decrease in the demand for this piece when Patek increase the production of 5524G and eventually come up with 5524R, J etc

I love mine. I suppose availability as well as demand will depend on if Patek keeps production low. I tend to think they will keep it low though, but that is just a guess.

You won't get a discount, and BTW the MSRP you listed isnt right. You are a few thousand too low.

This is my first post. Couldn't resist my enthusiam to share what a really nice watch the 5524G is.

I received my 5524G just last week. Had been deliberating for a long time and only made a decision when I chanced upon an article in our local business papers.

The paper have had an interview with Mr Stern and I quote from that article "people who said they disliked it secretly want to own it...........I could sell much more (of the watch) but I limit the production".

As what Tyler1980 have mentioned, it is a very beautifully designed watch; which I think will remain as one of my favourites of my collections.

this is why i think they will limit production. Not only has TS signaled it, but he also went out on a limb to release the watch in the first place. If they make a ton of them and they are being discounted which would make it look less desirable it hurts TS's credibility since the watch was 100% him. Ego comes into play here and he can control how "hot" or "rare" of a watch it is on the production side to a large extent, so that is what he is going to do. Thats what i would do at least. Its a niche watch anyway.

I think it looks much better than the 5522 and if the pushers were on the right then I would be tempted.

having worn it quite a bit now the travel time pushers on the left are quite an endearing part of the watch. It makes it quirky.
The WG would be the only "issue" i see. I actually love the weight and luster of it, its just a scratch magnet (especially because the entire case is polished) and it prevents it from being my daily watch which it just might be otherwise.

Im guessing if they put the pushers on the right, it would be to try to disguise it as a chronograph which would make it look too contrived.

I also like it much more than the 22, because of the dial layout. The 22 is still great looking too though.

I will admit I'm now a huge fan of the 5524G when my first reaction at the launch was of horror and revolt. I think it's a watch that still embodies the Patek Philippe philosophy very well, the more that I think about it, and it's well designed and practical for everyday use (extremely legible and has a useful complication.)

That said, I'm not sure I have the wrists for it as it does wear quite large on me.

its a very good video on it. It doesnt end the way you would expect. In a good way. Its really what the watch is IMO.

Watchfinders videos in general are actually pretty outstanding.

I've seen this video before. Love it - it played a significant role in changing my opinion on the 5524G. Seeing it in the flesh a few weeks back further cemented it.

I haven't seen a Watchfinder video I didn't like so far.

the worst part is half the time their retail prices in their listings are wrong that are listed so you can compare to their selling price. AND they are often wrong in the worst possible direction... too low. Then the watch looks like an even worse deal vs retail. Its quite a ridiculous oversight.

that have a 5170P listed at 500 under retail. Its actually almost 1300 under retail. They highlight the £500 savings

It certainly works on the 5164 where the pushers are quite small, but when I have worn watches on my right wrist I have found the crowns and pushers a bit uncomfortable riding up my wrist.

Thank you - of course I was typing it from memory and I may have confused it with the price of the 5168G (but I'm sure if that's not correct someone will tell me )
Have spent too much time lately studying the catalogue!

yeah the pics aren't helping me love this watch any less..
I know and have read all the negatives about it.. but I LOVE it...
I know I my AD can get me one in about 12-18 months perhaps less and has said as much.. I just am unsure about spending that much... I'm perhaps not as well heeled as some of the users on here.

But i'd consider massively offloading some of the rest of my collection to make it possible

I didn't expect they would discount in fact I was sort of hoping your could confirm they wouldn't (and you have) because as you said this would weaken values and my willingness to spend the purchase price, that said IF i buy one it's to wear not sell.

I've had it in my hands twice now and I am almost giddy over it!

Well, I obviously never looked at it close enough! I thought it was a Chrono!

Cheers to that Neil

That said, their bidding prices are extremely high compared to what dealers in the US and Asia would bid, so I guess it goes both ways.
