One vintage Rolex in the collection (with a $10K budget)
Lovely day everyone,
Was discussing with a friend of mine, who happens to be a real vintage lover, and this question popped up, and I thought of posting it here to see what most guys would tend to gravitate towards. With a Maximum budget of $10,000, of course you could use less, what would you buy? I voted the 1680, and my friend voted the 16750. Would love to hear what you guys would go for. |

You could get a nice 1680 white within your budget, but probably not a good red the way prices have gone recently.
In this price range I'd go for a GMT 1675 or a Sub 5513 (or possibly an Explorer 1016) and have some money left over for a fine single malt while I enjoy wearing it. |

In order of preference:
1) Red Sub 1680 2) 5513 3) White Sub 1680 |

I'm not seeing 1680 reds for $10k these days, (at least ones I'd want) |

I like the 1680 Sub in white for the price.

I agree you can't find a good red for that price at all. In fact I haven't seen any actually. Why would you pick a 5513 over a 1680, just for the sake of knowing. Is it the clean look, or? Quote:
Thanks for the responses so far. |

Traded my MF 5513 for a 1680.
Reason: 1. Personally I hated not having a date on my watch. 2. Personally I liked the bigger maxi plots on the 1680 over the Meter First 5513 Up to you on which route to take.

The GMT 16750 matte djal version would clearly be my preference. It has much more function than a Submriner 1680, more color and insert options along with various bracelet options that makes this Rolex a clear winner when compared to the 1680.

within that range I would look for a very clean 1675 early MK1 matte dial with small arrow hand and matching bracelet. m

Plenty of choice as someone has already mentioned - would be hard to go past a nice 16750 GMT though!

matte 16750
outside of vintage Daytonas, it is my favorite watch Rolex ever made. the matte dials, while not rare per se, are difficult to find in good condition. the hands were prone to corrosion and many have had hands/dials replaced with WG dials during service. they have the most aesthetically pleasing dial of any non-gilt GMT, imo. i am such a sucker for its tall coronet. it also has an updated high beat, quickset movement that the 1675 doesnt have. the 78360 bracelet is also definitely an upgrade from a 7836. |

For me, probably a cherry white 1680 (just love the top hat crystal), although a nice "great white" 1665 would definitely be on short list too.

I am with Springer on this one.......16750 matte dialwould be my pick. If you shop properly you may have enough $$ leftover to buy a vintage DJ too!

I think the 1680 is a great choice with its classic design and famous top hat cyclops 127 crystal You can't go wrong with its famous and timeless look IMO.

My advise is find the watch you like and go buy the best example you can find. Dont worry about what others are wearing or whats in today.

I would go for the nicest example 1680 or 5513 that I could find. It all depends on whether you want the date feature or the clean look of the 5513.

I would also take a look at the 16800 Matte which should cost around 5.5k and you can have enough money for something else.

How about a 1665 (great white). Got mine for just about that.
