Legacy piece, Explorer 1 or Speedmaster Moon Watch?

I was wanting some opinions from you guys/gals. What do you think would be the better legacy piece to give to my son when he gets older and would retain a great value? Right now I have a mint Explorer 1 114270, but I can trade it to my friend and get his brand new Omega Speedmaster Professional with Hesalite crystal.

Once they are both preowned, the Rolex will be worth more. I love the moonwatch but there is something extra special about handing down a Rolex to a loved one. I got my grandfathers first Rolex and my fathers first Rolex handed down to me and I truly treasure them.

Both fabulous watches, I'd pick the Explorer.

Go Rolex! With the moon watch, there seems to be a special anniversary edition out every few years, becomes meaningless after a while :)

I say go with Explorer 1 #114270 as I have one myself. I am surprised with the overwhelming replies going for the Explorer 1 given that people go gaga over the moonwatch. I am actually on the verge of getting a brand new Moonwatch (due to its iconic status) but after putting it on my wrist at the AD, it doesn't look quite right. Maybe the 42mm is too big for my wrist. Well if I really still want one I would buy it used for 50% - 60% of the retail price. But IMHO i think the Speedy Reduced or the First Watch in Space looks much better than the moonwatch

I'm going against the grain and vote for the speedy... But the Explorer most likely will hold better value.

Retain value?
If I got a watch from my father, I would never sell it, so market value at some point in the future would not matter.

Between the 2, I vote Explorer.
The bracelet will/should last forever. Your son would have the watch exactly as you have worn it. Would be an invaluable gift!

Brad

If even you cannot decide which is the best watch to give your son in X years time, no one here has a clue.

You know your son, we do not and opinion here is split which shows just how risky it is. He may not even be interested in watches when he comes of age.

Your best bet is to let him grow up and on the day ask him what he wants rather than what you want him to have.

He may want a watch or a piece of jewellery or whatever, but it should be his choice and his alone.

Regards

Mick

It does not matter what the guys in the Omega Forum think because not one single one of them knows the son who is going to have the watch.

It borders on madness for us to suggest what watch a young man should receive in X amount of years time.

How would you feel if your wife charged me with the responsibility of choosing a watch for you. Who is the best judge of what watch you want, me or you.

Obvious answer isn't it.

Regards

Mick

Exactly my thoughts Mick!
I have faith in my girlfriends taste especially after all the watch education she has received since we have been together!

Value shouldn't be a factor here. It's a gift that you plan to hand down.

For me it would be the Speedy.

By the way...I wouldn't do that trade. I would save for a while and find a nice older model SMP. Wear both and one day you'll know which one is the right one to hand down.

Of the two, I'd rather have the speedy. Not sure if that's much help to you ...

If you're just looking at resale value the Explorer will likely be worth more. However, when I was younger and could still see the dials the Speedy was much cooler. The Explorer is fairly plain by comparison. Take the names off of the dial and I would bet your son, if he likes watches at all, would go for the Speedy. I didn't appreciate the subtle, rugged elegance of the Explorer 'til I was a bit older. You know your son........
