Posted in the Rolex forum, the Rolex love cannot be surprising to you. That being said, I'd choose the Rolex as well.

That's awesome Ckci, for sure. I love my standard Speedmaster Professional, but the special re-edition of the 1957 original keeps the blood boiling too. Of all the iconic watches out there, Omega does the best job of all brands of making fresh derivatives of their classics, really makes changing them up very fun each week. I still stand by what I said last week- if the OP were talking about a 1016 Explorer vs. a Speedmaster Professional I'd tell him go 1016 Rolex in a heartbeat. But the current Explorer is not the same watch, it doesn't have a huge legacy, the Speedy is a better choice. It's official NASA lunar equipment, nothing can touch that really. |

Both great watches. In fact, I've just added an Omega Moonwatch to my collection but as a watch to pass down I'd go with the Explorer.

Just looking at the watches themselves, I'd say the Explorer. Though I think a lot of it depends on how each watch for you.

Legacy piece, Explorer 1 or Speedmaster Moon Watch?
If it is a legacy piece why does the value matter? A legacy piece is meant to be passed down. Not sold. I would keep the explorer because the omega is your friends watch. Not yours. Pass down YOUR explorer. Not your friends omega.

I bought this speedy when my son was born to pass down to him. I suppose he will get all my watches at some point but this will be his first I hand down.

Speedy or Explorer
I used to have a Omega Speedmaster Monnwatch cal 1861. Recently, I sold it for an Explorer 1. But that is me.
My recommendation is not to blindly rely on the good reputation of the watch company. Research how the company is run and who owns it. At the same time research who and how the essential main parts of the watch are machined, assembled, finished and tested. Once you are satisfied with which way is best for you then make your decision. Each watch carries great history. You have to buy what is correct for you. Patrick. |

If think your son can physically grow into a speedy, and if you're bonded by a common admiration for achievements of the Apollo program, maybe that speedy is the right watch. Maybe your son tracks current space program and ISS activities; maybe today's astronauts are an inspiration for him; maybe he's already figured out that every EVA consists of a Speedy velcro strapped to a spacesuit.
Context is key. If your son is too young for context, maybe the time to decide on his watch is when that context has revealed itself vs. before you've had the time/opportunity with your son to build that context. Just a couple thoughts. |

I love and own both for the legacy they each possess. However, I wouldn't get rid of the Explorer you currently have for a Speedy. As great as the Speedy is it will never hold its value like a Rolex.

I'd personally rather have the Rolex. The Speedmaster is a great watch without a doubt, but there's something particularly special about owning your Dad's Rolex that an Omega just doesn't quite match.

I love the Speedy, but if you had a choice of either, make it the Explorer or a Vintage Speedy otherwise.
The vintage stuff is going only one way. |

Explorer, it’s waterproof, automatic and has sapphire(?). Plus it’s awsome.

Regardless of used value, I'd like to own both, first the Explorer than the Moonwatch.

Don't go through that stress of exchanging. Keep your gold. Explorer over the OS
