How big do 36mm DJ's wear

I am looking at my first substantial watch investment, and a leading contender right now is a 36mm DateJust. I have small (6.5") but relatively flat wrists and usually prefer pieces in the ~39-40mm range. This will be my first Rolex, so I don't have any firsthand knowledge on which to draw.

I've always read that Rolex 36mm wears larger, with some people claiming it seems almost like a 38-39. Is that true? I don't mind smaller watches, but don't want to be dropping what is (for me) a ton of money on something dainty.

I wore a 36mm SS DJ with white gold bezel (ref. 16234) for 14 years and still think it's one of the classiest and wearable of all Rolex watches. I'm slim of wrist and would still be wearing it today if I hadn't been so smitten with the Daytona. Goes just as well with a suit as a pair of jeans and t-shirt.

As pickettt says, try one on...

I always love the 36s in the display case, but once on my wrist, just too small for my taste. Must try it on.

Fashion has gradually shifted toward larger watches. Some women are wearing 36mm Datejusts and some men are wearing 42mm Explorer IIs.

For a smaller wrist, the 36mm Datejust will be very proportional. You need to try watches at the AD and look in the mirror. If you wear suits, then wear a suit when you try watches.

I have an 8-inch wrist and I'm happy with my 36mm Datejust. I rotate between a 36mm Datejust (classic Rolex), a 39mm Explorer 1 (stealth Rolex), and some small vintage watches.

I love my DJ (white gold fluted bezel, oyster bracelet with polished center links). The white gold fluted bezel has a beautiful sparkle that I didn't notice at first. I used to have a plain bezel DJ that I sold back to the AD because I always chose the fluted DJ when deciding what to wear out to a restaurant.

Go try on some watches.

I, too, have small wrists. After the decade of oversized watches, I became used to wearing larger watches. Now I believe the oversized watches trend is changing, but I still felt like the DJ41 looked best on me.

Below is a pic of the DD36 (left) and my DJ41.

Depends on bracelet or leather. On a jubilee it's perfect foor any wrist size imho

with just leather stap the watch tends to wear look bigger because its the focal point. where as if with metal oyster or jubilee...it looks smaller. 36mm is classic. I woudl stick with 36mm unless you move to a tool watch like Submariner, Yachtmaster or GMT.

Definitely try one on but it should fit perfect on your wrist. My first Rolex was a DJ and never felt like it was too small

Try them on as suggested but in my experience the 36mm datejust and day date wear like a 38 or 39mm with the fluted bezel. My wrist is between 7.25 and 7.5 inches, see the pics below of my 16014 and 18238. IMO they wear fine. Keep in mind these five digit models wear a little smaller than their six digit counterparts. So in short I think on a 6.5in wrist you will be fine. But again wear what looks good to YOU.
