A real pilot wearing *the* GMT for pilots.

I do fly pretty regularly. Stayed on the plane during a short stop. Pilot came through the cabin to shoot the breeze.

We chatted about his watch and his wife bought it for him waaaaay back in the day and he told me he almost told her to return it when he found out how much she spent.

I wasn't changing time zones so I didn't have the BLNR on but he was super happy to hear about how much a totally original GMT is worth these days!

Yep - luckily we have a couple good local watchmakers since he was thinking it was overdue for a service (never been serviced in decades!) His GMT has got this killer patina to the bezel and a bit to the dial so I strongly suggested he go that route vs. RSC. in order to keep it original.

Hobbies can be a terrific way to enhance your day to day interactions with people. Turns out that watches and photography along with music are all perfect for that kind of connection.

Nice to see that he wears it with pride and still enjoys his GMT

(Don't want to be the smart ass, but did you ask his permission to post his picture ? Not everybody wants his face on the internet)

I brought my first GMT when I started flying lessons 18 years ago, then brought my 'FLY' number plate when I passed.
The GMT has been changed to a Ceramic one, by the plate remains.

That's great. I bought my D serial 16710 from the original owner, who was a commercial airline pilot in Central and South America...recently retired to Vancouver. The watch was in excellent original condition, never serviced or polished. I loved getting to know the gentleman during course of the transaction, and hearing about his long career. I couldn't imagine finding a more perfect GMT, short of having bought it new myself.

Totally appropriate to ask: This was him posing after I asked for the shot.

Great stories, guys. Awesome that so many of you have personal connections beyond going to the AD and buying a watch that you like.

Man, what a great story. He looks like a really nice guy and just the person I want flying any aircraft I'm on as well.

Both of my Brother In Laws fly. One Air Force retired and the other commercial. I wish they would lose their rubber watches. They have no interest in a Rolex.

Very nice story and pic. I bought my all black Y-series GMT-II over 15 years ago. It's my favorite watch. I've never had it serviced and it still keeps great time.
