Tudor Black Bay question

Would you purchase an old black bay, like 14-15 model (smiley face dial) with the old movement? or get the new one with the in house movement? and why one vs the other?? Trying to help a friend make a decision......

The aesthetics are different as you mentioned - the ETA version has a smiley text that I find charming personally iso the straight line text on the in-house, and the Tudor rose iso the Shield. The bracelet has riveted links in the new model - that your friend may or may not like - all this is subjective imo. The most objective positive is the 70h power reserve in the in-house, but it comes with a negative of being housed in 2mm thicker case. The non-COSC ETA has 100 years of proven reliability, and the COSC in-house is new, but most likely a great movement since Rolex has the know-how...my 2 cents.

Man I tell you - I love the Smiley Face dial.
The newer one has an in- house movement, but really?
Smile for Smiley faces! Classic look that is Tudor only!

Love my 2015 Black Bay Black (BBB) ETA. The "Self Winding" smiley face I think is part of the Tudor charm. As well I prefer the smooth edge oyster style braclet (not a rivet fan). The ETA is a fine proven movement which gets going after just a couple of winds and runs within COSC limits even though not rated as such. The BBB ETA (just the black) were only produced for about 6 months before being replaced by the COSC version, so perhaps a bit more rare down the road. Not to say the BBB COSC isn't a nice watch too. Your friend should try them both on and decide. Good luck. Cheers!

A lot of people prefer the older ETA....myself included....so the answer would be a definite yes from me. Easier to service by a wide range of watchmakers and has great aesthetic nods. Keeper.

The black ETA version is thinner, better looking, easier to service and more rare. That would be my vote.

ETA for me. Text, flatter more comfortable,IMO, case back and great movement.

Go for the rose dial or buy what you like as long as it’s the rose dial

I could write what I know about Tudor on the back of a postage stamp and still leave room for the British national anthem. 15 times. I'm not a fan. However, I tried on a BB red with the distressed brown leather strap a couple of months back and I was seriously tempted. In fact, I still am. That's the one I would choose.

Unless you must have the new movement, technical appeal is pretty obvious, I would opt for the mk1 ETA version.

And, as a matter of fact, I have.

I own an original burgundy BB since the very beginning. And have just acquired a black bezel ETA to share with my wife.

I much prefer the design clues of the mk1 (rose logo and smiley text) and the flat caseback. And there is nothing wrong with an ETA movement in a Tudor diver, it's even traditionally correct.

I wear mine on a rivet bracelet that I got from an mk2 owner, which I happen to like, and the black got the standard Tudor oyster.

Both are great, depends on what you want, if you want something more rare go for the black ETA if not go for the newer version. No downsides whatsoever, the black bay is fantastic.

I had the old ETA and preferred the dial and non-rivet bracelet, but then when I tried on the new versions, like the TT, I quite liked those as well, not really much of an issue in real life for me.

Asthetically I prefer the old, love the rose logo, and the smiley face, and the bracelet. The new one with the longer PR is also appealing, but for me... I wouldn't pay a premium for the movement.

BBB is Blue; BBN is black. N for noir which is French for black. I love the watch!!!!

The eta black Bezel has less than 3000 in circulation so that’s the one to have but they just don’t exist even used any longer.
