Is ladies Datejust 36 SS a "sought after" model?

Sorry, I am a newb to Rolexes (I am into other "vices" :-)). My wife really likes a specific Datejust 36 (model m116200-0070) and as I am doing research, I am seeing that ADs don't really discount sought after models. Before I waste time trying to find AD, who will give me better than MSRP, should I either bother with this watch, or just walk into store in NH (where there is no tax, like in MA) and just get it there?

Not looking 2nd hand, since well, my wifey is not interested.

I wouldn’t classify any Datejust as “sought after”

It is usually the SS sport models that are the most difficult to find.

Try reaching out to one of the trusted sellers on the forum like davidsw or takuya. They often have or can get you the watch you want, new or preowned, at a better price than dealing with an AD.

I wear a 34mm Date. I wonder if that is now "child sized".

Yeah, fwiw, that’s a bit of a traditional male watch, but ladies wear anything these days.

Ended up going to AD in NH with the SO and she vent for the 36 fluted dial version with jubilee. Her being very tall (just like I am), it actually works very nicely, compared to more "thrilly" ones. Oyster bracelet is definitely look too masculine on her. Jubilee was a lot more elegant.

I applaud the genius of a watchmaker, who can make a watch, that looks equally well on whomever wears it.

Yes, and not because it's chauvintist, but because it's ignorant. I seem to recall some 1970s ad copy by Rolex referring to the 34mm as being 'ideal for the robust child'. Can't quote; it's been a long time now, but remember being surprised that someone would spend maybe $US600 on a watch for their kids.

For the women gift selection for the recently passed holidays, Rolex promoted the diamond decorated DJ 36, which makes sense. No one is saying women shouldn't wear what they want, some of them wear the sports models, but this doesn't make a certain model the "ladies whatever". 36 size models are men's watches, which happen to fit quite well some of women's wrists out there.

The only DJ variant which may be geared predominantly towards females, IMO, would be the flower motif dial. The white dialed version posted in this thread would like right at home on any wrist

My wife’s DJ. Not sure I would wear this and would lean on classifying this as a ladies model.

For all the hair-triggered, super-sensitive types hung up on the OP using the word "ladies", take a deep breath and re-read what the guy wrote at the outset...

It's a watch his wife has her eye on, hence, the thread title using the descriptor "ladies Datejust 36 SS", i.e. a Datejust 36 his wife wants.

Note in the thread title "Is ladies Datejust 36..." that he didn't capitalize "ladies" as if he thought it is the proper name for a 36mm DJ, nor did he write "Lady Datejust", which, since it is Rolex's best-selling model, anyone (before being offended) on a Rolex Forum should know is the Rolex-given name to 28mm and (unofficially) the 31mm DJs designed for the generally smaller wrists of women in mind. It is not, however, what his wife wants. She wants a 36mm DJ, and all he did was qualify that this particular example was desired-by and going to be purchased for a lady.

I sincerely hope this explanation smooths some ruffled feathers.

To the OP: Welcome to the Forum, and I'm happy your wife found a DJ to her liking at the AD

(and now I'm off to invest money in the makers of Play Doh)

Actually no, I recall wandering through some local dealer in the past year that had a section in his case labelled "ladies DJ". Just traditional DJs in all usual sizes with dials other than white/black/blue/silver some with bling some without... there was even one on a coloured shiny patent leather strap too I think. Wasn't looking closely.

My dad bought a 31mm DJ back in the late 80's in Hong Kong, they called it "boy's size" back then, and I'm stretching the term "men's watch" a bit when I wear it out nowadays. Interestingly enough, to the extent that people even noticed the watch, no one has ever pointed out that the wristwatch was small, perhaps having 6 1/3 in wrists help with the proportions.

There are some 36mm watches that are likely more for ladies then for men. Flowered dials, multicolored stones, etc. I wouldn't get too upset about the use of the term.

Did you go up to Springer's in Portsmouth. They're pretty good to deal with in my experience! Glad she found something she likes.
