My College Graduation Present

...after 20 years!

I guess it is never too late. I have had a couple of modern iterations of this iconic model (SUBC and LV); but the first one I ever saw in the metal, and that introduced me to the world of Rolex was the 16610, in the mid 90s. Well, as a college student I heard stories of kids getting their nice timepieces as graduation presents, and I couldn’t help but to think that I might, just might, be one of those lucky ones; however, my parents are from a different train of thought; and I actually admire and respect that. They worked very hard, saved and accomplished all they ever dreamed for their family...so, the graduation date came, and as I was getting ready for the ceremony, both of them came into my room and handed me a little box. Inside there was a very discreet, yet elegant, gold chain, with a plaque. On the back of this plaque there was a writing that said “A Day To Remember.” Well, indeed it was! Completely forgot about that Rolex Sub that I was desperate to have. As life goes on, and with 2 children of my own now, that little plaque has been engraved several times, including wedding date, and my kiddos births...what a beautiful present my parents gave me!

Fast forward to the past couple of months, and as a near my 44th birthday, for some strange reason I have started to develop an appreciation for things that have stood the test of time, and among them, that 16610 came to my mind again. So, I started my quest for that model. And I was beyond words when I found one in the hands of Chase Young (a TS in the forum)...a quick and flawless transaction, and here she is...it couldn't get any crispier that this (Tritium dial, hole lugs, and sapphire crystal, B&P). And, the icing on the cake; Circa 98—my year graduation.

And ready to keep company to another oldie I got about a month ago; my 1675. Now, my debate is: since I don’t have any more space on my plaque, should I continue to engrave the future 'Days to Remember,' on this beauty??? I sure do!

Thank you so much to this incredible forum

Nice ending to your story Andre.

But do you lose a point for buying the Porsche first?

Hehehe...it’s my wife’s Eddie! I happen to be the designated driver on weekends...So I’m still good my friend! Thanks!

Btw...nice bike! I owned a GXSR600...then my first kid was born, and my wife forced me to sell it...part of the deal.

Well done and congrats!
I love my 16610 and plan on having the case back engraved at service time, so I vote yes. Keep the dates going.
If you ever need/want to sell (which I doubt) you can buy a new case back for a $150-200 and it’ll be fine.

Well, what a great story. And I'm of the mind that we appreciate these types of "gifts" that we do for ourselves as opposed to mom and dad doing it.

Two beauties there...congrats!

Great story and great watches. It's not often I can say this given that we all own luxury timepieces, but I'm quite envious of you. Here's to hoping you have many more days to remember!

Congrats and what a great story! Chase is awesome I just bought a 14060 from him and it’s amazing. You made a great choice. You can’t beat those mid 90’s rolexs for the price. Wear in good health!
