I would do the same thing and hope he picks up the check.

I'm going to go with the multiple other Seiko suggestions. Their cheap ($200ish) automatic divers are iconic. Reliable, completely built inhouse, and a great way to introduce someone to the joys of mechanical watches. Get him one of those now and see how he treats it, the Rolex can come later.
True story: Cycling buddy of mine gave his son a Seiko diver for his 13th birthday. You should have seen his face light up when I recognized and asked him about it.

I agree, I do. Even if I were that wealthy, I would NEVER buy my child a car that costs as much as some people's HOMES.

I totally agree. But... alas... I only dream of being THAT wealthy. Lol

I had to drive my son back to the practice field to get the Seiko 5 he left there when he took it off during football practice.

I’d lose it with him if it was a Rolex.

I think it’s a great sentiment and one I’ve considered too since one of my boys is very into watches.

For me, I’ve decided to make it a graduation present if he’s still into watches then.

I like this idea a lot! I’ve told my family never ever buy me a watch. Not because I don’t want them to but because I don’t want them to stress out about getting me the wrong one. I hope to pass all my watches down to my children but who knows if they will have the same taste that I do. You can’t go wrong making an entire experience out of going to an AD and choosing one together. And of course the celebratory beer after too!

Don't do it, when he's 22 or so buy him a watch at that time. His taste is surely going to change. And giving a Rolex to a 14 year old is a joke. There will always been watches around, don't worry

She is not but I tell her different opinions and perspective. We won’t move in either direction unless we both agree

I'd only gift on graduating college/Uni not school. As it is years off maybe put the money in Rolex fund so he can choose on the day.

I'd conservatively invest the money now and after college graduation allow him to pick out a Rolex, or take the cash for something else.

Hello everyone, really interesting post so I could not resist to share my thoughts. I read great and equally respectable opinions form everyone here, thank you for sharing.

I would let him earn his own money in due time and buy his fist Rolex by himself. Life is easier for them after you help the kids to grow as a self made men/women.

You can let him use yours on select occasions to further fuel his passion.

Regards,

Dino
