which one of these watches is the best value

hello everybody,

i'm a rookie, both to rolex and watches in general. after much looking around, i have decided on a new submariner 116610LN. so i checked with a couple of ADs nearby here's what i got offered:

model - price - wait time
114060 - $6,400 (2-3 months)
116610LN - $7,300 (1-2 months)
116610LV - $8,165 (3-4 months)
116713LN - $11,785 (ready stock)

the questions i have are:

- are these good prices? i've read on several threads here that 'how you buy' is important. this will be my first luxury watch, so i don't have a relationship with any AD. it seems expecting a discount is normal, but it also seems no AD has the SS subs in stock, so i'm thinking why would they even discount it?

- i am noticing that these are below list prices on the rolex website. now, i started off wanting to buy a 116610LN, but if the prices on some of the other models are better (in terms of resale value), i don't mind buying it.

for example if the $100 watch will resell for $80 but the $200 watch will sell for $190, i'd buy the $200 one even though it costs a little more upfront.

i live in india, btw and these prices are from a local AD.

thanks in advance.

Buy whatever sings to you, if you’re buying for an investment I wouldn’t use a Rolex for that purpose.

So, I'm confused. If you've decided on a 116610LN, isn't that what you're going to get?

And yes...those prices looks good to me. Compare what they're going for in the classifieds or watchrecon.com.

Prices are all really good. The LV is a thousand below MSRP. Personally I think the 114060 is the best bang for your buck, however in the grand scheme of things the cost difference is negligible when you are committed to spending 5k+ on a stainless steel watch. Choose what you like most.

Of the choices you have the best watch for resale or value will be the LVc.

116610LN is an excellent choice. Very iconic, goes well with everything (given the color) and is always in good demand to sell used if needed.

That price would be excellent in Europe. A 116610LN new costs almost $9780, if VAT tax is included.

The LV by a far margin is the best deal by your numbers. I am skeptical you can actually buy one close to this

X2.
Since you said you decided on the 116610LN and have a quote etc, seems like that’s the one to get...

Pretty surprising to be offered those prices from an AD with no purchase history in the current environment.

Are you buying the watch to wear it? If so, this logic is horribly flawed. You have valued the endpoints of owning the watch...your purchase price and selling price. You've placed no value on the actual utility of owning the watch. What if you get $100 worth of enjoyment out of the $100 watch in your example, but only $10 worth of enjoyment out of the $200 watch. Would you still buy the $200 watch, just because you'd take a slightly smaller loss on resale?

To me, it's a little sad that you're entering the world of Rolex and luxury watches with such a big focus on resale value. Why not buy a watch because you really like the way it looks and feels on your wrist, and just enjoy it without worrying about how much you might be able to sell it for?

The best value is the one that you can afford and satisfies your desire to own

thanks all for the responses.

watchwatcher, mjclark32 and mtgjr: i was expecting to pay around to $8.5k for the SubC LN and the LV was way out of my league based on prices i had seen on various US portals. i like both, and one is more expensive than what i wanted to spend. but once i heard the prices from the local AD, well... greed. i got quoted lower for the LV than what i was expecting to pay for the LN.

and then i stumbled upon this website planetaryprice dot com which shows a pretty wide price arbitrage across the world. so i thought i'd check with the more experienced people here if i'm missing any gotchas.

for example, lacoste shirts (original) are cheaper in india but of a lower quality than that in the US. lacoste has them made locally under their brand name. i'm not saying rolex does something like that, but i'm in unknown waters here, so just want to make sure there's nothing i'm missing.

kauffee: could be due to certain recent tax law changes... i don't know.

i'm going to try to get a written commitment on both price and approx. delivery date before i put down an advance in the next few days. we'll see how it goes. i'll come back and post an update here.

sorry about the long rant. just want to make sure i'm understood.

Mr dunkin. Can I raise my hand and ask you a question ?
Have you taken into account the 18% updated Indian GST ( Goods & Services Tax ) imposed on luxury wrist watches by the Central Government ?

My pick would be the 114060 - a simple classic.

The LV at a discount is a great deal. It's highly desirable currently and selling above list. Discount is inversely proportional to desirability.
