Black dial, brown leather?

We all know that brown belt with black shoes (and vice versa) is a faux pas but I was wondering if I am wearing brown belt and boots if it would be weird to wear a timepiece with a black dial. Tell me I am overthinking this!

People do this all the time but I wouldn't. I have a brown dialed watch (PAM662) just for this use case.

Maybe I'm overthinking things as well.

I expected this to be a question of whether you can wear a black dial with brown leather strap, which has always been a pet peeve of mine...

As for black dial with brown accents (shoes, belt, etc.) - I think they are far enough removed from each other that it is fine.

A black dial watch on brown leather has never been a look that I connected with yet it’s done all the time.

Traditionally, the matching should be on types of leather, meaning the strap of the watch rather than the dial.

People seem to put speedmasters on dark brown straps all the time. It looks OK but not something I've ever done with my speedy. The Bond nato is my favourite strap for that watch.

This, at least for people who care in the first place.

I'm not normally a fan of black dial and brown strap, but I've definitely seen it done well. A number of Panerais, the Black Bay 58, the Speedmaster 57 with the fauxtina lume and vintage broad-arrow hands... Those are all sportier looks, though -- in a dressier situation, I can't think of a watch I'd wear with that combination of colours.

But, yeah, match leathers not the watch dial. And whether the dial matches the strap or the rest of your outfit is a separate issue.

Thanks for all the input. To clarify I was thinking about a black dial on bracelet with brown belt and shoes

Black dial, brown strap works for me... as long as belt and shoes match.

Edit...ah, I see. I still think it's ok. Steel bracelet is neutral territory in my opinion.

"Black dial with brown strap" is no problem at all. Generally, match your strap to your shoes is more important IMO. Just image search google to see many examples that look good.

Yeah OP - I’d say bracelet and pretty much any color dial (black included) are okay with brown belt/shoes. Again, small enough accent and far enough away from brown accessories, so should work fine.

I’m actually the opposite. When wearing brown belt / shoes I like to wear a brown strap watch or a white / silver dial watch.

But as for black dial on brown strap - I’ll let the picture speak for itself.

Boy, after reading this thread, I’m rethinking some of my strap choices...I kind of think if a brown strap is reddish brown or light tan then it’s ok for sure with a black dial watch.

This looks fantastic on vintage pieces but horrid on modern ceramic pieces.

Oh I misread then too.

Yes you’re grossly overthinking lol. I would actually even go as far as saying that’s being way too ‘matchy matchy’ and actually looks bad. It’s good to have varying shades, textures, etc. Have your basic color palette down for the majority but small accessories or socks are wide open to have fun.

Think about it, are you going to change your hair color and wear contact lenses for every outfit too?

Nope never ever ever wear brown boots with your speedy. Height of fashion indiscretion. Indeed, reckless!

Is it okay to wear a black-dialed watch on bracelet with brown shoes? Wow. It’s amazing to me that some people are able to go out and be productive in the world with important questions like this one weighing them down.

I actually think a brown strap with black dial looks absolutely stunning. Really makes the dial pop and is a good way to dress it down instantly, as well as gives it more of a personality (in my opinion).

I would definitely wear black dial with brown shoes/belt.
