Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich

What do you think about the new Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich? Any other Omega competitors out there? Was thinking about a Seamaster, but then the Speedmaster caught my eye.

Beautiful watch but I have always thought the original moonwatch is the one to own. I had an older one and I am now looking at newer ones.

Sapphire sandwich is on my list. I like to see the movement. Best of both worlds in my opinion.

Almost bought the sapphire sandwich but to me the hesalite looked better. I didn’t like the sapphire halo effect. If they still made the hesalite crystal with sapphire exhibition case back I would have bought that model. The hesalite imbues the speedy with much of its character - many speedy enthusiasts prefer it. Plus it’s cheap to replace with service (comparatively)

i bought the 1863 sapphire sandwich just before they were phased out. i consider the 1861/1863 as the last of the true moonwatches.

while the new one is antimagnetic, hacking, vintage looking, coaxial movement.

the 1863 has proven itself to me.

Must confess I got the idea from my Speedy Sandwich.

The Speedmaster is a great and iconic watch. Get it in the configuration that works for you. I currently prefer the Hesilite.

Me too. I bought an 1863 about 6 months before the new one came out. I got it on an alligator strap. No regrets. Love it. When I buy a watch, it’s mine forever. I don’t flip or trade them like other do.

By the way, I walked into an Omega boutique thinking I was going to buy a blue dial Seamaster 300mp, but walked out with the Speedmaster instead.

New 3861 sapphire crystal is way better about "milky ring" and reflections than previous 1861 ones.

I prefer the sapphire because shiny. And scratch resistant.

The display caseback is just a bonus. Of course, you pay for it.

I have just bought the new one and it arrives in boutique this week. I looked at both and really couldn't notice the ring on the new model over the Hesilite so went with the sapphire to get to see the movement. Boutique also said these are in short supply and have been selling very well.

That's an interesting perspective since the 1861 has only been around since 1997?

The newer case backs takes the Rolex case opener.

Two watches that have interested me for a while are the Rolex Air King and Speedmaster Saphirre Sandwich but I like a date function.

Hesalite looks more vintage but much less practical.

The speed master had the same affect on me too! I walked in to buy the 300 and am changing my mind as well!

For those who have seen both of the new Speedmaster models, what is your opinion about the difference between two bracelets? Does the polished part give it a much different look? Or is it pretty minor overall?

The look is very much the same to the casual observer. Up close to the wearer, you can say that the polished bracelet suits the sapphire variant better due to the scratch resistant crystal and the applied Omega logo.

For me, if I was to get one, I'd get the sapphire with the brushed bracelet. I prefer the functionality of scratch resistant sapphire with minimised bling of the brushed.

Almost all the bracelet is brushed, only inner parts are polished. A bit of humble charm.
