New Ipad magnets?
I am sure there are a few member who regularly use an ipad. I do. I wonder if all the magnets on the new Ipad are enough to effect a mechanical watch?

How close and how long is your watch stuck to the iPad?

Ha ha, a magnetic field extends beyond a magnet.

I have a new Pro 12.9 1TB coming. I don’t think it will be any worse than my current iPad Pro. The Smart Cover magnets was a issue years ago with cheaper automatic movements. I never had any magnetism issues with any of my Rolex, Panerai, etc, movements and I use a iPad Pro for everything. You never ever should rest your watch on top of your phone or iPad anyway.

Then this really does not sound safe for you or your watch, not sure how Apple can sell such a dangerous product.

I don’t know the full details, but I believe Rolexes with the blue parachrome hairspring are more resistant to magnetism and some newer Rolexes are even more resistant to magnetism than the Milguass.

The magnetism given off by a tablet or smart phone is unlikely to affect a watch if you are wearing/holding both items as you would be expected to. The seriously strong magnets that stick an iPad case to the side of the iPad though...those can interfere with timekeeping big time.
Simple rule is; if it’s a magnet, your watch isn’t going to be friends with it (the exceptions being modern non metallic escapements and hairsprings). |

That was the first thing I thought of when they announced it. I think there are about 120 magnets in that thing. I had an old Breitling get magnetized getting too close to a speaker magnet. It can happen.

That said, the newer Rolex's are pretty "anti magnetic" with the materials they've migrated too as of late (thinking balance wheel, balance spring, etc.). I'm sure someone here has more details on that. And I'm "NOT" saying Rolex's are impervious to magnetic fields, but they're vastly better then they were 20 years ago. |

The relatively powerful magnetic flux emanating from our Sebo's, are the reason I don't do the vacuuming!
Damn that magnetic flux! |

One reason I wear my Milgauss and not worry. Antimagnetism is becoming a more useful feature in our daily techno lives.

I never thought of that. As I sit here holding my iPad. It’s about 8” away from my watch. Constantly

I also wondered this. It shouldn't be an issue with the newer 32XX movements. Below is directly from Rolex's website: "Made of nickel‑phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic interference" and they offer more comments on the anti-magnetic properties of individual components here: https://www.rolex.com/watches/rolex-...ibre-3255.html
Im curious though what affect all these magnets would have on older but still modern movements like the 31XX series or the 4130 series. BTW here is a link to details on where the magnets are (everywhere)" https://www.pocket-lint.com/tablets/...magnets-inside The magnets are so strong the Ipad will stick to a refrigerator door!: https://www.cultofmac.com/588990/201...erator-magnet/ |

No problem for my Omega! I just keep my watch away from them and I wouldn’t rest your watch on the pad

I think as long as you don’t take off your watch and leave it on top of your iPad, it’s fine. Of course it might be fine even if you do leave it on top of your iPad. Who knows. Try not to worry about it.
