How to use the oyster link removal tool

I'm thinking of buying the Esslinger oyster link removal tool to remove a permanent link for my Rolex 114270.

There are two things that I'm still not sure and hoping someone who has used the tool can help:
1. Will the tool leave any damage or scratch mark? Is there a technique to use it so that you can prevent scratches?
2. Once the knurled pin is pulled out, can you use the same pin to close the link or do you have to use a new knurled pin?

Short answer is yes, it will always leave some tool marks as it’s metal on metal contact. If the tool face is brought down flat and has even engagement they will be minimal and brush out easily.

I recommend cleaning the bracelet in a ultrasonic tank, then heating up the pins prior to removal so they come out smoothly. If it’s an older bracelet with a lot of wear or any amount of corrosion the pins can break off in the link if you skip this step.

It’s actually pretty straight forward after you’ve done it a few times. Hope this helps.

1. Yes, it will leave some tool marks, which are easily refinished as you would any link scratches.

2. Yes, you can re-use knurled pins as long as they are not damaged. Since they are pressed into the link there will be grooves from the knurl already there and the fit may not be as tight.

If they are too loose, you can re-knurl the pins, or you can use loc-tite, the same as you would for the screw bars.
