Talk me out of it…

Talk me out of it…

Or into it…

I sold my Submariner 114060 to a friend for an offer I could not refuse. I do not regret selling because I decided awhile back that I wanted a date function. My AD has been trying to get me a blue dial DJ40 with jubilee bracelet and smooth bezel. I have been waiting for a year and a half and she stated it should be soon. But who knows. She is also at the mercy of Rolex and the market.

Meanwhile I am without a daily and vacation season is approaching. I am at the beach and in/around water a lot so I need a watch with water resistance.

This watch caught my eye. Breitling SuperOcean 42 white dial. I called a Breitling Boutique. $4,200. No discounts, but she was willing to throw in a blue Breitling strap, buckle, and bracelet removal tool with the purchase. I called some dealers but they did not have this exact watch.

I think it is quite stunning and love the white dial. Cons are price (I am not rich, this would be a big purchase) and resale value is pretty terrible. Maybe could get half if I needed to sell.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

I think I would hold off for the Sub if that is where you really want to end up. Enjoy the vacation!

I am actually waiting for the DJ41. I figure it has enough water resistance for my needs. A Sub date may be nice down the road but that is a ways off.

I guess my question is whether the Breitling superocean would be a good interim watch until my DJ41 comes in.

I picked up a Breitling SO 42 black dial new from grey market for half of that cost a few months back

It’s a ton of watch for the money and one of my favorites

I recently bought a DJ 41 in blue from David. Was just a few hundred over retail, and arrived the next morning.

If you need a "stand in", get one you can complement the DJ and doesn't break the bank.

I've owned the SuperOcean 42 in the past. It's a good watch but is top heavy and thick, compared to the Sub and sold it for that and other reasons.

A good piece that wears flat and is relatively inexpensive would be an Oris Aquis, if I had to choose.

Seems like a Seamaster or Pelagos would be a safer choice as a stand in watch. If you can get the Tokyo Olympics Seamaster at a discount from AD you will have the color you want and can possibly sell for a profit later.

Buy one used. Breitling makes an extremely good watch built to last decades, and you can save thousands of dollars buying one that might have a few marks on it...I consider this to be a huge advantage Breitling has over Rolex.

No

Nothing against Breitling, a very nice watch… but it’s not a Rolex.

I would pass. I have my eye on another Breitling, but we'll see it one day.

Pass for me also unless you have 4k to throw away. You’ll never get that money back.

Get a Planet Ocean. 39.5 if 43.5 is too big. Killer dive watch. I don't miss my black sub not even for a second.

Go to a regular Breitling AD and get a discount if the boutique won't give you a deal.

No, man. No.

If you need more than 100m water resistance and Rolex is off the table, then go with a BB58 or Omega diver.

Wait for the sub and buy a seiko or similar while you wait. Even a Oris used would be a good value option if you wanted to spend a little more (than a Seiko)

Mistakes are tough to correct. I wouldn’t have sold the Submariner

I would not do it. It looks like you can get a new 126300 blue dial jubilee from a trusted seller for a relatively small premium (when factoring in MA sales tax savings). I would go that route.

Pass for me, don’t settle for the breitling. You should have a look at the Omega Aqua Terra in the mean time. They offer rubber straps.

I'll talk you into it!

My primary (and favorite) dive watch is the exact watch you are thinking about. I bought it on the bracelet, but I also like the Breitling blue rubber strap with the clasp not the buckle (it has a built in adjustable micro-adjustment which requires no tool).

I have three Rolexes all with 100M WR (EXP2 and two DJ40s), but I think it is nice to have a summer watch that looks good on a bracelet or a rubber strap, which is made for the water for the summer, or when I am snorkeling or going to the beach, ocean, lake, boating, kayaking, canoeing etc., and if for some reason the strap/bracelet broke and the watch was ever lost, I'd rather lose the less expensive Breitling than either of my DJ41s!

You can do much better on a new SO42 price-wise than what you have found so far. I bought mine earlier this year from an AD and paid a little more than what the Gray prices were at that time.

ckr

Nah man I'd pass, but you do what your gut is telling you.

First, I wouldn't buy a new Breitling since the depreciation is ridiculous. Buy used if you want a Breitling.

Second, if you're just wanting a watch to scratch the itch and bide some time, go get something cheaper like a Hamilton or a G-shock or a Zodiac or something...

The SO is not my style, so would take the DJ, but if you want the SO then get one with a big discount from a grey.

I have debated that particular Breitling for a couple years. Specifically on rubber with deployant, which I don't think is sold anymore...instead with a pin buckle. Anyway, once the Seiko SPB213 was introduced, my wants went to that instead, as it cured my only beef with the Breitling - the power reserve. And the Seiko clocked in at $1,200. Pretty much perfect for white/ blue summertime watch. In my opinion.

However, when push came to shove, I ended up with a blue Pelagos.

Pass on the Breitling unless you will keep it forever. Look at the Trusted Sellers and get the watch you want for slightly more than msrp and tax. You will never recover the money lost on the Breitling and it is not the watch you want anyway.

This!

That watch is a fine watch (actually darned nice), but should never be bought new from AD's as they can be had grey market at pretty significant savings (nearly new).

I’m clearly in the minority but I really like that watch. I was also recently in the market for a stand-in but decided on a less expensive route. I bought the Weil freelancer with the DCT coating.
