All watches are unnecessary in todays world. I am old enough to have had a pager before there was a cell phone. I never owned a Swiss made watch until 2009. Why, because the concept of style and luxury caught up with my income or vice versa. I am sure someone out of college is not likely to have a need for any Swiss Luxury brand, but wait a few years as the career and the income develop. The watch remains unnecessary, but the heart and brain are unfilled and the dollars are there so you purchase something.

lol, I have a performante spyder - they come like that from the factory. That being said I go into “quiet mode” anytime I’m in neighborhoods and drive slow. The car and watch world has a lot of crossovers. I love attending car shows and see what everybody’s wearing. Although most of the time it’s gold AP or iced out datejusts - neither really interest me.

In regards to the topic at hand: I always liked watches but never understood my dads obsession with high end brands. My dad was always into JLC and Cartier and Bauer Mercier. He didn’t get his first Rolex until his late 60s (a beautiful gold datejust). I helped him buy his first President (1803, his dream watch) when he turned 75.

Me personally I wore a Rado for a years (high school graduation gift) and then a Raymond Weil for many years as well (college graduation). I loved them but I really wanted a Rolex. It takes time for everyone to slowly “graduate” to a certain desire for Rolex. A lot of my friends first watches is an Apple Watch and now they all ask me the same question: “how to get a sport
Rolex from an AD”.

In this topsy-turvy market, you may be at the bottom and just not know it yet.

Oh I wish I had that kind of luck..

Back to the OP topic - I agree with others, that Rolex is a life stage thing. For that matter most luxury goods are like that.

It's not a surprise that youngsters don't take up an interest in luxury watches, nor is it any meaningful indicator of their future propensity for them.

That's where I think Rolex is extremely wise. They don't attempt to cater to all demographics by coming up with some silly, fashionable models that dilute their luxury image. They know their target clienteles well.

Who would have predicted in the 70's that folks would be into mechanical watches to the extent they are.

Trying to predict what people (especially young ones) will want and pay high prices for in the future is a losing game. I buy what I like and is "reasonably" (highly subjective) priced and don't worry about future trends.

My grandfather couldn't understand the gain in popularity of wristwatches when his pocket watch stood the test of time. High end wristwatches have become fashion statements and jewelry in today's world.

With all those internal combustion engine Porsches and Ferraris and Rolex's being so readily available and cheap soon... I'm gonna need a bigger garage and watch safe.

Maybe he just doesn't care about watches-
This is an odd hobby, dealing with ridiculously expensive, minimally functional wristwear.
It's not for everybody.

If they can't walk down a street without flexing, they have a problem which isn't the fault of a "Status Watch". But fair enough. More watches available for the rest of us. Everyone wins.

Glad he knows what he likes.

There are thousands of other people waiting to buy a Rolex. The elevator is still going up

Most young people today would choose tech over luxury. Especially if it's Apple.

^^this^^

shouldn't be surprised that some people aren't as excited about watches as you are.

My kids think I'm a lunatic for having watches that cost more than $100. Watches are just not important to them, they'd both take an '08 Subaru Forester over a watch a million times.

If he doesn’t want a watch, then get him a really nice pair of brown leather shoes instead. Lower cost and he will look good!

Pricing DOES INDEED seem to be softening... ever so slightly... on the grey market.

I see a plateau on some models and a slight reduction on other well established models.

New stock (2021 models) are still in that euphoric stage.

I found myself nodding to everything you said until this. These new garish OPs seem to be catering to the fashion chasing crowd.

My boy loves his tudor bb58. I'm happy about that.
My girl has no interest whatsoever.

My 11 year old has taken an interest in my watches, and I let her try on my polar explorer just yesterday and her eyes lit up like Christmas. Made me all warm and fuzzy inside to see her enjoy it.

Let em have their Apple watches. Those who appreciate analog and mechanical details in the never ending age of digitization are here to stay.

My grandfather offered me his diamond wedding ring among other expensive items. He was trying to be nice. I declined it because I did not want him to think I was interested in taking his wealth.
Of course , foolishly, I never verbalized that to him and who knows what he thought.

I would not make assumptions. Ask him why and maybe you will get the truth.

I don’t actually mind it. In fact I smile every time I hear open valve V10s. Anything that pisses off the local HOA Karens puts a wide grin on my face. I just happen to know they’re kids because they always unknowingly try to race my wife in her M2.

Good for your kid. He did not want a piece of jewelry and that is totally fine.

Old timers complaining about kids and their rock-and-roll music is nothing new. If anything, I give props to the new generation for wanting to spend more on experiences and less on things. Kids'll turn out all right just like we did despite everything that people said when our generation was growing up.
