Rolex are certainly shrewd in their marketing strategy and it has served them very well through the years. It does appear though that the five digit and a few of the six digit ones may have been the last of a certain era of toolwatches as Rolex move onwards with a different approach.

Oddly enough, I think new Sea Dweller is the best proportioned sport watch since the 5-digit watches...but it needs to be shrunk to 40mm with the same proportions.

However, yes, outside of maybe the 114270 and the OP, Rolex more or less died to me after the 5-digit series. I wish there was a 5-digit forum.

Agree...5 digits marked the end of the "Tool Watch Era". As for Rolex being dead though - hardly! Are they different today? Yes of course. Companies evolve and change over time. The good news is that between vintage, 5 digits and modern, there are great choices of high quality watches that most can enjoy!

I am surprised to see that people didn't like the novelties that much. I think that the new Sea-Dweller will be more popular than the previous one. Second, I think that it the Datejust 41 in SS will be very popular as well especially that you have the option to get it with the Jubilee bracelet. I also think that the Daytona with oysterflex will be very successful. I am sure we will see much more oysterflex than when they only had it for the Yacht-Master. Regarding the Sky-Dweller, I believe it will sell very well too. But tbh, I didn't really like this move since they always presented it as the most complicated Rolex and should be exclusively produced with PM. Commercially, I think they're offering more choice. I don't see how it could be dead really...

Agreed, but, man, Adam is going to kill me for saying this, but shouldn't there also be a vintage, 5-digit and modern forum, too??

Dead? No.

Evolving with market? Yes.

If death means a new wheel of fortune Yachtmaster and gold rubber Daytona, then yes "Rolex is dead today".

Hyperbole.

They cannot hit it out of the ballpark every year. The 2016 Explorer, the regular Submariner 114060, the GMT BLRO 116719, the Daytona 116500 white, etc are still spectacular watches.

That's the point: buying a new watch should be a joy, not something that you have to "get over it" in order to like it!!!!

Rolex biggest clue that they're moving in the wrong direction should be the fact of how many people pay how much money for vintage pieces, rather than investing that in a new Rolex.

If it's really dead, then why are you wasting time on a Rolex forum asking people if it's dead? Wouldn't you just walk away?

Rolex is alive and well.
Not real sure about the cyclops but the 126600 is a handsome watch. Like all new releases, I look forward to seeing them in the flesh and trying it on to make my final opinion.
I have never been shy about the fact that I love the five digit references from Rolex anyway.
As for new releases, I have found over the years that you never can truthfully judge them until you hold them in your hand.

I remember everyone was up in arms when the D-Blue DSSD came out...Now everyone loves it...I think change is hard sometimes. But one has to admit that Rolex does what Rolex wants....

Let's not be overdramatic or anything...... The great news is you don't need medication just yet as there are plenty of other great horologically significant brands out there.

Yep completely turned to dog s h I t overnight IMO with the steel sky dweller, sea dweller cyclops and the Rolex wheel of fortune don't even know the correct name the multicoloured one. Currently trying to sell my GMTc been slowly going off the Rolex brand for a while now and this has just sealed it for me.

I think with the world of social media, mock-up photos, and quick movement of information and ideas --- leads to a very large volume of shared ideas, and more information seems to hype up what we would like to see, so we are usually disappointed. If Instagram/Twitter/TRF was around in the 90's, I am sure we would be "disappointed" in yearly releases well. Not sure if this makes any sense.

If you think Rolex is dead, that's more a reflection on you and how you handle change and evolution.

It's perfectly fine to prefer older models (I think I do too) but it doesn't mean the brand is dead.
