Rolex vs Omega / Look at it from the other side:

This way we all know, two beautiful timepieces / Movements.

Omega Caliber 8500 :

calibre-8500.jpeg

Rolex Caliber 3235 / 3255

Rolex-Calibre-3255-Perpetuelle.jpeg

1 barrel vs dual barrel, Breguet spring vs Silicon spring, Co-Axial Escapement vs Chronergy Escapement, bla bla.............

Look at it from the other side 😳
The Dial Side !

Omega 8500 Dial side (very ETA)

ome8500mvtfront.jpg

Rolex 3235 Dial side (beautifully blued screws, it is a masterpiece !)

Only one deserves the crown.

Not a pointless thread, if peope bring more detail to the discussion.

My detail: the 8500 has been on the market longer, with very few reported issue from what I can see. Which is unusual for Omega I think. The Rolex movment remains to be seen. Bit as it's Rolex I think we have faith.

3135, 3155, 3185/86 are much older and more beautiful than 8500 (Dial side movement).

its a matter of opinion (it is a forum afterall ).

in omega's defence, the omega's have optional transparent casebacks so i imagine the cosmetics matter more on the back of the movement during the design of the 8500 -- rolex put more $$$ on the face side.

they're both wonderful and if we're talking about movements in general, there's some from lesser known (poorer) makers that would shame rolex if people knew about them.

May you share with us which specific makers' movements would shame rolex if we're talking about movements in general?

Both great. Rolex movements are workhorses. But they are not the best finished --and that's why there's never been transparent casebacks in a Rolex. (A tradition where it stands alone I think across all brands)

Cellini Prince

But to be fair this movement doesn't fit in with these comparisons

Well I have a Grand Seiko Hi Beat GMT with 9S86 caliber which is beautifully made and so on, but it doesn't have a Breguet overcoil, neither does it have a screw balance.;)

Cheers

GS is more 'haute horology' than Rolex

GS movement is def not more robust and proven than Rolex's. We are talking about "movement in general" so please don't just talk about decoration.

I have an idea: take both the Omega 8500 and the Rolex 3235 and put them in an magnetic field generator, then crank it up to over 10 tesla. See which one is still running.

That's one area of mechanical watch technology where Omega is the undisputed leader.

Well... perhaps. But aren't we actually buying the machine running the timepiece? SS, ceramic, blue, green, black dials, etc. are all just expressions of what's going on inside the case.

I just posted a perspective that people won't buy the new SD because they'll opt for the Sub date as it looks nearly identical but costs $3K less. However the movement in the SD is superior which justifies, in part, the price difference. But people won't care, probably won't even know or care if an AD tells them.

Me too. I find Omega more advanced in their design and movements than Rolex but Omega has a larger company and more resources so it lets them do a lot more.

Apologies if this has been discussed before , but what is average tesla the average person is exposed to ... I mean, metal isn't even allowed near a 1.5 tesla mri machine , so unless you are a physicist , I'm not sure if anti-magnetism at the level of omega's newer calibers or rolex's Milgaus make a
Difference in 99% in the vast majority of wearers

Absolutely true. In many ways it's similar to the increased water resistance between the Submariner and the Deepsea, or the Seamaster 300 and the Ploprof. No scuba diver is ever going to dive to 4,000 feet deep, so what's the point of making a watch that could withstand those conditions? I think it's the same reason why Hillary and Tensing Norgay climbed Everest. Also, the watch tech race is basically a bragging contest. Still, it's an impressive achievement.

Wrong. The seiko 8L35 in the mm300 based off grand seiko is just as robust. Also Seiko is well known for their tough reliable bulletproof movements at all price points. Rolex and Seiko go head to head when it comes to tough movements and watches. Sorry.

Clearly your a rolex fanboy and are ignorant to other brands. Thats fine. Do your own research.

Zzzzzzzzzzz

What is it? Robustness or decoration? Because The 8L35 is just as robust and the 9S are more haute horology with robustness. Lmao.

Actually not intended as a tribute to Omega by the OP, if you read it ... rather the reverse, in fact.
