I am looking at a watch site where various Rolex models are listed by NEW users with no reference, low post and accepting only WIRE.
Is this the new way to go?

When buying an expensive watch only face to face transactions. Exception only for buying via wire if you have done business before with the seller and trust him.

My most recent gray purchase was with a seller in Sweden. He had good feedback but not a lot of history like some sellers on TRF for example, so I paid a little extra to use my credit card. That afforded me a little extra protection. Everything went fine and I'm very happy with the watch and the deal that I got (it was a non-Rolex brand where one can still obtain a discount in both the gray and grey markets).

I was once looking at a WG Sub and it was the seller who wanted a FTF, not me. I almost did it, but it wasn't the cost of the flight (miniscule compared to the cost of the watch) but the time that it would take for me to fly cross-country that killed it for me.

Still, if one is spending $10K or $20K or $30K+ on an item, it might be worth the consideration to go ahead and take some time and fly out and check it out in person.

I Think face to face is preferable but not necessary as long as you are dealing with a trusted seller. Also, dealers like Luxury Bazaar (roman sharf), watchbox, etc are reliable dealers. Ideally find a trusted seller who is near you.

If you turned your question around and compared that watch site to eBay, and turned the item around from a Rolex to a 2ct. Diamond, would you click Buy It Now for a new seller seller with no references? I think not...

For Rolex it's different because they're so popular with fakers and modders.

Buy only from:

1) The AD

2) Well known resellers like Takuya and DavidSW

3) Major resellers in person (who you trust has not modified the watch)

4) Any trusted sellers on TRF that have developed a reputation

Buy the seller first! Plain and simple. It's worth the piece of mind knowing who you are doing business with - there's a reason they have the reputation and feedback that they do.

Buy the seller, as is prudent - use your head my friend, wiring money to someone you don't know is a TERRIBLE idea. There are exceptions, like trusted sellers on this forum - but if buying from someone you don't know suck up the 3% and use PayPal. If they won't accept PayPal STAY AWAY.

If you can get a good rapport with the seller and obtain what photo's you need to convince you the seller indeed has the watch. Then you need to actually talk with the seller, not emails or text. Then you need real references you can verify and talk to. If a seller is legit they can provide references who will talk to you. A few ADs or a banker who can vouch for someone goes a long way. Bad sellers will let you know they are up to no good quickly if you pay attention. Spotty communication only done electronically with no real information being given to disguise that they are not where they say they are and/or do not have the actual watch in their possession.

Why deal with individuals? Simple. You hope to get a watch for a price somewhere closer to dealer wholesale than dealer retail. If the price is closer to the current retail aftermarket price, go to a TS all day. Do your due diligence is all.
