Just got a Seiko SKX007j.... (part 2 - pics)
Original post - Just got a Seiko SKX007j....
Well here are the pics. I bought it off ebay and it came straight to me from sunny Singapore. It's pretty much the same watch as it's American counterpart, but this one has "21 JEWELS" on the dial along with "MADE IN JAPAN 7S26 R 2". I had it on for 2 days straight and it lost about 25 seconds. I think it is getting better b/c the first day it lost 20 seconds and over two days 25, but I'm going to wear it for a week straight on a cruise I'm going on. Figure I'll write up a quick review after I wear it a bit. It came on an oyster band, but that had to be the worst POS I have ever seen in my life. I mean I have a Fossil watch from junior high that blows the Seiko bracelet away. I quickly ordered up a 007 22mm nato (from references here on TRF ) and put it on tonight. I figured I didn't put the nato on my 16610 so JJ wouldn't mind But everyone is bored of my typing and just wants the "watch porn" as I call it. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . That should hold you guys for a bit....

Great looking watch. Love the Seiko divers. I'm surprised to hear about the bracelet but that is my favourite Nato and it looks good on that watch.

Very cool. One note about losing time:
The 7S26 movement has a tendency to not get wound up fully, due to the fact that there is no crown activated winding mechanism. I would suggest taking it off, and then holding the watch face up in your hand and 'swirling it around' with a medium vigour for about 30 seconds. That should bring it up to speed. |

just ebay skx007j and you'll see. Don't worry about what bracelet it comes on. I should have gotten the rubber.
Vukota, Thanks for talking me into the Seiko. I love it.

Any news on the timing Mik?
I've been researching the skx007j and it looks great, but I have been put off by some tales of 30+ seconds drift per day. I guess it takes some time to bed them in, cause other folk have reported 1.5+ secs accuracy.

It isn't nearly as accurate as my Rolex, but it is adjustable. My Rolex is ALWAYS -2 sec per day (no matter what I do). The skx007j has been at most off -10 sec per day, but also I had a day on the cruise where it was +3 seconds. I lay it face down and it seems to help because mine runs slow. For under $200 I guess you can't expect to much. I don't know if you can regulate them. I'm thinking about cracking it open to begin a watch tinkering hobby. See if I can regulate it myself for fun. Maybe it will be off 30 seconds one day, but so far, the worst I've seen has been -10.

Thanks Mik,
As you say for a £90 or so what more could one hope for. Still it looks good - maybe a pay day pressie! Hope you enjoyed the Caribbean! David

I truly believe that this Seiko is THE ultimate toolwatch: Cheap, good movement, excellent lume, great water resistance. This is one watch that anyone can confidently, without fear, without having to baby due to its low cost, wear in the field.
Great Seiko! |

Here is a pic of the diver in action! Well not to much. Just a small dip in the Caribbean Ocean on the 7 Mile Beach.

Anyway Mik you have inspired me, I ordered an SKX007J from a well known eBayer dealer in Singapore and mine should be here in time for the weekend. Currently in Subic Bay - so going the Pacific and Atlantic route. You can't purchase the J version in the UK, which seems to be better finished than the non-Js. Many of the UK eBay sellers have non-Js at good prices but without boxes or warranty. I know mine's going to be a beater but I do like the idea of having some sort of warranty. I bought the rubber strap version, which saved a few quid. The "oyster" bracelet looks cheap and nasty. So add to the mix some NATO bond straps and a Bergon strap tool and I should have some fun mixing and matching straps to my Sub, Tag and now Seiko. Pics will inevitably follow.

You'll like it. Just keep your expectations in place. It is not a 16610!!!!! I'm thinking about another beater fun one. Its brother the skx011j which is orange. I'll put it on a rubber or and black/orange nato. Looking forward to your pics.

I'd go for the orange Seiko. I've seen pics of it in this section and while it looks great it's a touch too bright for me, even though orange and black do combine well. FedEx tracking has my watch in Paris, so it's getting closer. My Tag goes to my best friend this weekend and so I'll use the Seiko on those rare occasions when I would feel nervous with the Sub.

Well mine arrived today, taking a mere two days from Singapore to Edinburgh courtesy of FedEx, which is amazing. I loved seeing "delivered" on the tracking page, going down to my receptionist, "David there's something here for you," "I know thanks." The Royal Mail could learn from them, reliability and speed for example, being two things useful for a mail service, neither of which they regularly display.
Anyway, the watch is very attractive, a nice size - it appears slightly larger than the Sub, and felt really comfortable on the rubber strap I ordered. However, as I also received my NATO straps from Eddie at TimeFactors out came the Leatherman Micra, five minutes and one slashed finger later, the rubber had gone and the NATO was on. I'll post a pic when I have some light, but Mik's shots are spot on. This is the first non-metallic strap I've worn in over ten years and it feels incredibly comfortable. Setting the date and time was easy, following the instructions, although I was freaked out to see arabic days appearing until I realised that the calibre is clever enough to know which you prefer and do a double flip so your chosen language is used. It's certainly running fast out of the box about 8 seconds after 6 hours but hey it's jet-lagged. It's clearly not as "cultured" as a Rolex but with a Bond NATO, the black face, excellent dial with the subtle line of orange text, chunky bezel and nice ride height, it all fits together and looks great. And it's excellent value. Thanks again Mik for letting me know about them!

It's a great watch for the money. I wore mine for the first time "in anger" today during my 4 mile exercise walk, and it caught the sun real nice. It's fantastic value and has much presence.
OK it's not a Rolex but it's chunky and fun, especially on a Bond NATO. Nice one Clarence!
