New Grand Seiko Quartz Diver: Your Thoughts?
Cat's finally out of the bag on this and I gotta say I kind like it and especially in white! That black on white is bad and pops IMHO!
ref: SBGX115 (white) and SBGX117 (black) It'll likely be GS's robust 9F61 ND movement which makes sense in a diver. Not a huge fan of the bezel font but would likely warm-up to it anyway as it has gives it a fun monster like feel and does seem to balance the watch better than its SBGA029 brother. With MSRP at ~$3700 I think it definitely has some appeal after discount and will serve to fill a niche Seiko is missing at this price point. I currently do not own a diver or a quartz and the idea of owning one GS's 9F movements is as interesting as an in-house automatic for those that are unedumicated: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/introdu...-quartz-9f-the Here are the specs: http://blog.livedoor.jp/bestshinjuku.../50859892.html So what do you think? |

Seems like a lot for a quartz watch

Check out the hodinkee link in the OP
GS quartz are quite special. You're also paying for GS quality which is unparalleled for the price. The increase in price from GS's conventional 9F quartz models is likely because of the robust diver case. Still, it is more expensive than its 9F brothers but only by $400-600 after discount. |

I like the black, but with 42,7mm its too big for me. Not a fan of quartz and price as well.

Too expensive for a quartz watch & I'm not crazy about the look of it.

Seems like I'm the I only one that gets it.
Has anyone brushed up on even the most rudimentary 9F technology? |

It's not about getting. Just preference. These are accessories. Performance is not the major reason people purchase them:

Whilst I love Seiko and especially their quartz models, In not completely sold on this one. I don't like the bezel look, the 200m rating, the small plots and the price. Beautiful hands and nice white dial, with the usual fantastic build quality and movement.

Like the look, not the price. Also the numbers on the insert look just a tad to large in the photos....

I think Grand Seikos are interesting and appreciate their history and build quality. However this particular model just doesn't ring my bell for some reason. I prefer the Marine Master.

Looks ok, but way too expensive..
Plus anytime a brand needs to add "Grand" / "Elite" / "Reserve" to their existing name to denote a higher level.....I'm not interested. Call it a "Seiko" and charge $1500 for it and I'd be interested... |

Not a fan. I don't really see a niche that this watch fills. I read a couple blurbs on the watch/movement but don't see that they have done much that I care about.

Seems like the guy who designed bezels for Breitling lately got fired (no surprise) and has a job at "entry GS" division.
What I dislike about GS quartz (even I do love High End quartz movements) is that they do not care about second hand-index alignment even in this product line and it drives me nuts to watch it on a watch :) 200WR is enough of course - but should not GS be something like the leader? Not sure, prefer other options form Seiko. Have seen photo - side by side comparsion with Spring Drive Diver GS and the new one looks like very poor relative. Lets see how they look in real life, I am looking forward to. |

Anyway I love Seiko and GS but the bezel REALLY bothers me. It has the whimsical low end font on a serious watch- a Grand should be grand. I also always hated that terrible hex screw in the middle of the lug and that sawtooth cartoon bezel on the otherwise perfect sbdb001. |

The GS divers don't do it for me. I prefer the classier looks of their dress watches. The 9F movement is great, but $3700 is pretty steep. I think other quartz GS watches are quite a bit cheaper.

The Prospex line really does it for me but there's always something missing! With the MM300 it's the anemic crown, with the MM600 it's the size and looks that kill it, BUT the new SBDB009 SD Tuna is pretty sweet looking... Too bad it's DLC Ti. |

I don't care how robust a movement it is or if Hodinkee says its unicorn-poop, not paying almost 4K for a quartz. JMHO

Good part? - No nonsense grab-n-go diver/casual watch with amazing accuracy, don't need to set time or adjust until your battery replacement.

That's understandable. How do you feel about entry-level luxury Swiss watches (e.g., Tudor) that are around the same price (4k) and use generic ETA movements?

If I go Seiko for a diver it'll either be quartz or the SD SBDB009 which has been getting great reception and still in that Pelagos range (the other option). No doubt VERY BIG but tuna buffs claim it's more ergonomic than any other... I could likely get over the DLC titanium and categorize it as a fun (albeit expensive) beater. I'm not big on big watches but there's something captivating about the tuna and its history. |

I am a fan of classic looking watches (call me boring, I know...). That alone is enough for me to choose the Pelagos over the SBD009. Besides that, it would be really hard for me to justify 3k+ on a Seiko (non-GS). The Pelagos is a beauty and has the quality of a Rolex. The Pelagos is probably the most "tool watch" of any Rolex/Tudor currently in production. Put on the rubber strap and you're set.
