Grand Seiko is often referred to as the Japanese Rolex and is seen on par with Rolex in every way but brand recognition.

... and as a result of not investing oodles in marketing Grand Seiko NIB street prices are >30% less expensive than comparable Rolex (trusted seller) NIB street prices. Of course that lack of brand recognition also bites the GS owner if they go to sell, vs. Rolex, unless it is a (wanted) limited edition GS.

Grand Seikos are hand made and the vintage ones wiped the floor with the major Swiss brands for accuracy before the COSC was formed in 1973.Now before the Swiss COSC was started they used to have Observatory testing and competitions to a much higher standard than todays Swiss COSC. And during the entire 23 years of testing, 5093 wristwatches were submitted for certification, and only 3253 were passed, about 64%, today around 94% pass the COSC test first time. Just a few manufacturers participated, and only Omega and Patek did so every year. The others were: Rolex, Zenith, Longines, Movado, Vacheron & Constantin, Ulysse Nardin, Cyma and Favre-Leuba, along with numerous independent professional watchmakers. That was until the Seiko Grand come on the scene and started to wipe the floor with the Swiss mechanical watch industryNow in those days only 2 brands in the + 23 years of the competitions submitted movements of only serial production for retail sale(Seiko and GP).All others were specially made movements just for the competition. And it was ended by the Swiss in the early 1970s after two straight wins by the Japanese straight off the production line Seiko Grand watches.

Don't like the look but can't deny the finish on this Credor is epic.

The bevelled angles, polished screw slots with ruby mounting, mirror polished parts, complex bridge plates, and etc.

Just curious, where did some of you hear that GS bracelets are made in China? My clasp is definitely stamped "JAPAN."

So it should be, given the price tag.
Also helps that the watchmakers who are responsible for the Credor Masterpieces and the Eichi, visited and took advice/teaching from none other than Philippe DuFour himself, and he speaks highly of Seiko’s desire and ambition.
There are only 10 pieces produced yearly, with an 18 month waiting list, currently.

Hand assembled – a Roger Smith watch is hand made. It’s a subtle, but accurate, distinction.

I heard (but am not sure) that everything including the oil on a Grand Seiko is made by Seiko. Certainly, my two bracelets are stamped Japan so have no reason to doubt it.

Quick photo just now.

Great value, if you care about workmanship and not brand name.

Seiko obviously is a powerhouse in the watch world, but it doesn't have the "prestige" of the Swiss brands, as the result, it can't charge as much, nor can it raise price every year.

Seiko SBDB001 and Sub are similar in MSRP 10 years ago, while the Seiko stayed the same price for the past 10 years, its counterpart Rolex Sub almost doubled in price.

And yet more people are willing spend money on the Sub than the SBDB001, that right there, is the difference in brand power, not quality of the watch.

In fact, due to the yen devaluation, Seiko in Japan is actually cheaper than a few years ago, lol.

Tom, the Seiko SDDB001 is a Marinemaster (£1500) and not a Grand Seiko (£5200), the equivalent Grand Seiko (video below) to a Sub is in a different league to a Marinemaster and has a similar price to a sub.

I held several models when I was in Japan. Simply wow. I was stupid enough not to get one. Due to the exchange rate today you can probably fly to Japan and buy one there for the same cost as getting one in the U.S. Outstanding finish. Unmistakable Japanese design. Fantastic!

No you missed my point.

Seiko SBDB001 Spring Drive came out at 2006 and carried a price tag of 4000 USD, Sub at 2006 was nowhere near the price it is today, it's also around 4500-5000 USD, no date version was 4000 USD I think.

But the Sub has since then essentially doubled, while the SBDB001 still carried the same price tag (though it has been discontinued this year and replaced with SBDB011 at 4500 USD).

So they were in the same league in terms of list price point back then, but Rolex raised price every year and took the Sub to a different price league, in which Seiko had to come out with a GS Diver to compete with.

My point is Seiko can't raise price every year like those Swiss brands, if they could, the Seiko Marinemaster SBDB001 would be almost as expensive as the Sub today.

High beat are nicely made with great movements.

Personally Not a fan of the electric components of the spring drive although they look as nice as the rest.
