Back to the Planet Ocean, except this time it's Liquidmetal
For 4 years up until last year I happily wore the previous version Planet Ocean on my wrist. It was a great watch, a design I admired, a watch I assumed would be my grail when it first came out in 2005. To me it had everything, seamaster history, a great design, quality finish and was comfortable to wear. In tribute here it is
Then for some reason Rolex consumed the WIS in me and I went on to own and flip every version of the Submariner- ND, SD, date and the Sub C. After buying the Explorer 2 (which I confess to being my favourite watch) the Sub C just wasn't getting any wrist time. The Sub C is far too nice a watch not to be worn and there was no way I could afford to have an object of such value sit in a box, so I decided to flip it. Once I mad e that decision my mind turned immediately to the Planet Ocean. No other watch was in the picture. I went to the Omega dealor and tried on the new 8500 coax PO however I realised that I wouldn't be able to live with the thickness of it so my thoughts went back to the 2500 coax PO. [Whilst for some strange reason the 2500 movement appears to be a turn off for some who believe the internet conspiracy theorists, my own experience of the 2500 meant I had no such qualms with going back to a watch of this movement. Of the many people people I know well in person or in the forums who have owned the 2500C Coax, I do not know of one who I know to have had issues. ] I believe I was fortunate to notice that the dealor had the Planet Ocean Liquidmetal limited edition sitting in the window. I have no idea how long it was sitting there unloved however it was love at first site. I've seen the Omega photos and other owners pics of this watch and to me the main debate was to whether pay a premium over the original Planet Ocean. Thanks to some of my WIS friends I decided to take the plunge. I went back and for the second time in my life, bought a new watch from an AD. I had never previously been a fan of any of Omega's limited runs however from the press releases I remember this one being rather special. If you break the liquidmetal version down, it is a 2500C Planet Ocean with some sporty modifications. The most striking feature is the ceramic dial. This is the only Omega to date with a dial made from ceramic. It is an amazingly eye catching dial which looks very different in different lighting and angles. As such can be difficult to photograph. In some angles it is shiny and reflective, in others it is the deepest black you can imagine. The applied numerals add a further touch of class to dial. I love the red Seamaster writing. It's amazing how such a small change in detail can make something look so much more attractive. The other difference is the applied lume is white compared to the green tinted lume on the old PO. This again adds to the contrast on this extraordinary dial. Last but not least there's the liquidmetal bezel. off black fgrey in colour it gives off both a sheen and a matt coloration again depending on what angle or lighting you have. This is an incredibly attractive looking sports/dive watch. In looks I believe it overtakes most of the Rolex sports watches for which one still pays a few grand more. It's refined and sporty appearance almost makes the great old PO look toolish. I can never tell if any of my watches become keepers however for now I'm delighted to be owner of 1648/1948 and be part of what appears to be a very strong and loyal owners' club. Enough of my jibber jabber...I'll let the watch do some talking.... The case back I bought the Liquidmetal thanks to the sale of my Sub C, and seeing as this is the Rolexforum afterall here's a side by side before it left the stable Here's my collection as it stands and probably stay for quite some time!

Awesome review. Great pictures, it's amazing how the crystals on POs just disappear. It's a shame Rolex doesn't ar coat there crystals.

I had heard rumors that Apple bought the patents for this. I wonder if we'll see another edition. Would be a shame not to.

Firstly I'm jealous! Secondly, what a great set of pics.... and thirdly I'm kicking myself for not doing the deal when I had the chance to buy one from the Omega boutique!
Lovely watch - and enjoy!

Awesome trio of watches! So very envious of those 3 although I don't know if I would flip the SubC out of my collection...then again it will always be around for you if you change your mind, unlike the LM...Congrats! I can tell it's difficult to photograph but it looks amazing...

It is always hard to resist the Explorer II as it is so clean, fresh and nice looking. I love it too.
But keep your PO and Speedmaster as you really have three aces right now.

Love the LM and Im really into ceramic/gloss dials and bezels and got myself a SUBc. Will probably get the beautiful black CSMP next as LM is too expensive for me now.
