Icon5 the crystal of my watch is sapphire or acrylic ?

Hello everyone. I own a Rolex Day Date 36mm , manufactured in 1980. I am in doubt whether the crystal of my watch is sapphire or acrylic.

When Rolex started using the sapphire crystals ?

Just test the hardness. Tap it on your teeth, if its hard and glass like - its sapphire. If it's plastic, its acrylic.

Another trick—put it up to your cheek. If it’s cold, glass. Room temp- acrylic.

Slight curve/dome, acrylic. Absolutely flat, sapphire.

Post a photo and we’ll tell you!

My watch is a circa 1950 6105 and I was told my crystal was plastic. Were plastics being used by Rolex 70 years ago?? I couldn't believe it.

You better believe it. 70 years ago, there where no synthetic sapphire crystals, but acrylic has been used as glasses for wrist- and pocketwatches much longer than that.
