Just paid for pole position

I know this is going to make a few heads pop, but I just put down a deposit with my preferred AD for the first slot on a 2019 release. In the event that 2019 is a non-E inspiring release cycle I will just roll that to another piece I already have on order. I asked, they asked, I agreed, they agreed, all good. And, yes I believe they will keep me in the top slot. These guys take good care of me in that regard. I know its odd to pre-pay for such, but he said, and I believe them that they are already getting a lot of calls to be first. Money down wins.

Nothing odd about an agreement between 2 consenting parties. I hope you get a nice watch.

So you’ve pre paid for an unreleased watch of no specific model or reference that may or may not be released at an as yet undisclosed price?

Congrats.

Imagine the free cashflow for the ADs accepting these types of "deposits."

My AD’s Basel release procedure is pretty clear cut. On Basel release day, call or text your SA with any requests. The first five or so will be offered to their VIPs who are actually a pretty small number. After that the SA’s will make a “lottery” list with each one’s two picks. Anyone else comes after that. I got the 12th BLRO they received 7 months after the first one in June.

Correct, I have an order in their system for a non referenced model. We picked an "average" and the deposit was 50% - $4500.

Last year I was so sure we were going to see a SS Coke and I wouldn't shut up to them about it. They thought it was comical to put an order in (internally) for a watch with no reference, but they did it anyway. They didn't ask for the deposit last year because they thought I was nuts. After the BLRO release they figured I was close enough on my guess that they let me have the first. This year they indicate they are getting a fair bit more traction for potential new releases. I didn't mind paying the deposit.

Honestly, not a bad tactic. Much better than paying some ridiculous premium with a grey and if nothing comes out that you like, you can get something else.

insanity for a watch.

you could be making interest off that and still be on a list somewhere.

but if it doesn't move the needle then rock on brother.

In some way I get this, but at the same time not something I would do. I can't wait to see the incoming, and here is 50% CON-

If he gets the watch in 6 months he’s only lost $68 in interest assuming 3% rate... seems worth it to me

You were right about that!

If I comprehend the agreement, your $4500 (the deposit for the unknown SS Rolex TBA @ Basel) will be applied to a Rolex already on order if you don’t actually like any of the new SS models.

So they are actually using it as a placeholder for the unknown model you’re predicting you may want.

Nice play but I think AD's need to Only sell them to Good Customers who are not going flip them. The people in it to make a quick buck are driving the grey market prices out of control.

Hence the bail out clause. With a due respect to Milguass fans, of which I am not considered.

Idk. For some reason I feel like everyone's going to want to be in his position on the date of the announcement.

Every year there's a 'must have' watch - and as OP clearly stated, he's not bound to anything if he would rather roll it over to a watch already on order. Worst case scenario the money goes to something else the OP wants. Best case - first one to get a SS Coke.

Why is that crazy? Paying 20K for a Steel Pepsi with a purple bezel - that's crazy.

Anything in particular you are hoping for? And what watch are you on order for?
