Review: Pelagos vs. Submariner

I put the Tudor Pelagos up against the mighty Submariner in my latest article. Check it out and your opinions are welcome in the comments:

The first picture on your review - first glance - talk about twins. On closer examination, my originally view point remains, I think the Rolex looks slightly more "luxury".

At the price points for both watches, however, there's only one that you are paying a premium for the brand name.

Nice review and photos
Pelagos is the no-brainer for me, if you are not hung up on brand and resale.
Better size (for me), more functionality (clasp, lume) and superior power reserve, water-resistance.

Nice review Bruce I hate to go all Canadian on you, but IMHO it’s a tie.

The Submariner is a bit more understated and subtle to me, in that it looks the part whether dressed up or down. The Tudor is hands down a tool watch. Good either way you choose to look at them.

I just wish they both would lose a couple lines of text on the dial

Very nice review, I share some similar sentiments in my comparisons of my Tudor Black Bay to my Submariner.

I see it the other way - the Pelagos is the one that is honest about being a tool watch. The Sub, with its polished surfaces, is trying to be something it's not, convincing people it's also dress watch.

IMHO, of course. No need for anyone to release the hounds

Fantastic review and beautiful pictures Bruce.
As a tool watch, I love Tudor for its dial visibility / clarity and lume.
What I Don’t like is the poem written on the dial at 6’ :-) too much text.
The Sub is more than just a tool, it’s a watch that can do it all, from Tuxedo to a diving suit and everything in between.

To each his own..
I find the Pelagos unnecessarily big and bold.
The bracelet reminds me of a Hamilton I had in the past.
Plus, those five lines of text... they could get rid of that ´Self Winding´ stuff and stick with something like ´Officially Certified Chronometer’..
I do like the hands and indexes though.. legibility is top notch.

Interesting perspective. I see the Pelagos as somewhat subdued considering what it brings to the table as a well engineered dive watch. The bracelet, with links hinged at both ends, and creatively designed clasp, are home runs for me.

You're spot on about questioning the need for Rotor Self-Winding. Removing that would have been better, but not a deal breaker.

Excellent comparative review! As much as I respect the Submariner, it was the Pelagos grabbed me when I first saw it - I eventually got one and couldn't be happier! I don't have the desire to press a tool watch into service as a dress watch (I don't take Bond as a style inspiration), so the unapologetic nature of the Tudor is right up my street!

Personally feel that the Pelagos is the best value diver around.

I was actually looking at the Black Bay M79230B-0008, and the Pelagos before my employer shuttered the doors a couple of weeks ago.

Hopefully I’m able to revisit both models again.

I have a pelagos LHD, and the crown-left makes it very wearable on left wrist despite the somewhat chunky case. "Aged" lume isn't really very noticeable.

Great review, I have owned both and give the edge to the Sub for versatility

Also I agree with Brian they need to scale back some of that (oak tree) dial text

Here is my own older personal review of the Tudor Pelagos for additional information:

Tudor Pelagos Engineering Notes

Tudor looked at the Rolex Submariner and said "How can we update this thing and make a bunch-o-money?"

And they did . . . by creating the Pelagos:

Fully lumed ceramic bezel insert (Rolex is getting behind the times here, with a few other manufacturers already having implemented lumed bezels!)
Larger/wider indices and hands = easier to read
The lume is GREAT! (Read that one more time)
Helium gas escape valve – great if someone ties your feet to bricks and tosses you overboard (say what ???)
Keeps time (MT5612 in-house movement) as good as any of my Rolex. My Pelagos = minus 0.2 sec/day. That is about minus 6.2 sec/month or minus 1 minute 14 seconds per year!
Movement, head and bracelet are certainly as durable and well-made as a Rolex
70 hour power reserve (Rolex is slowly catching up here with newer production)
Deeper dive capability = 1640 feet versus 1000 feet for a Submariner (not that we'd ever be diving that deep, unless we were retrieving “Bricks-on-Feet Guy”)
Dial overall slightly larger (1/8” = 3.2mm) than a Sub, so that is nice too
42mm size – but the lugs are shaped/sized such that it can nicely fit small flattish arm bones such as 6.5” to 6.75”
Titanium – sans a few parts of the bracelet
My Pelagos LHD is also not getting as much abrasion wear as the SS Rolex, and I do not baby my watches at all
LHD version (only) has slightly "aged" ivory lume, a very nice, subtle aspect
The engineering of the auto-adjustable bracelet is VERY well done and user-friendly
Comes with extra dive straps, color-dependent on watch dial color, blue or black
No distracting/annoying(?) Cyclops date magnifier
No Antireflective coating to get badly worn as is typical with AR crystals
Roulette date wheel - even days are in red, odd in black (LHD model only)
No shiny polished case and bezel to act as a "shiny fishing lure for sharks." LOL
The Pelagos is exactly one-half the cost of a Submariner for this vastly improved but otherwise “similar” dive watch item

The Pelagos has SOoo surpassed the Rolex Submariner in every way imaginable

Pelagos is pronounced as: pell-uh-goes (Yeh; I was calling it pell-AHG-ose)
NOTE: Pelagos is Greek for “sea”

Service interval should be ~10 years as is modern Rolex, but not being there yet I have no idea of cost. Not on my worry list

In my opinion the Tudor Pelagos is as well-made, durable and accurate as any Rolex

The Pelagos immediately became my daily wearer - knocking out my favorite Rolex

I could go on, but by now you understand my enthusiasm for the Tudor Pelagos
