Rose or White Gold 3940???
Getting really close to buying my grail, a 3940, but am so hung up on which metal. I really love them equally, so am considering their versatility in my final decision making. I've never owned a colored gold watch so have no perspective (I even have a platinum wedding band), so hoping some of you who have can help.
I don't wear suits that often so want to be able to wear this amazing watch casually as well. Do folks wear rose gold, leather-strapped watches with jeans and t-shirts? I have a Grand Seiko SS watch that I can definitely get away with wearing virtually anything, so I know the white gold version won't be an issue. I just don't want to feel guilty looking at a rose gold beauty in my drawer most days because I feel it looks too dressy for what I'm wearing. Also, do I run the risk of souring on rose gold, which seems to ebb and flow more with fashion trends generally? Thanks for any input. And don't bother suggesting I buy both. I'm selling a kidney for this already. |

For a classically sized and discretely thin reference like a 3940 (at 36mm size). I would go with yellow or rose gold. WG and Platinum are great but will be discrete to the point of non-existence which could be what you want.

Anything for this great watch.
They are so versatile. Consider strap options with the different metals. Black strap with white metal and brown strap with yellow metal.

Got the yellow and love it. Classic piece and classic metal.

A lot of this is personal preference of course. Myself, I'd go WG (or plat).

Personal preference, mine is RG.

If I was going color gold, I think I'd much rather do rose.. especially from Patek since it's so close to yellow with a slight reddish tone.. so it's really a more dynamic yellow gold to me. But I'm not a gold guy so I'd do wg.... Worth noting is I tried both white gold and platinum... And the weight/presence made the decision easy (versus see through caseback). Love the platinum.

I know exactly what you mean. In pictures the WG/Platinum sometimes reminds me of a JLC perpetual, but I KNOW the Patek is more special. Which is why I keep going back to RG, because it’s more befitting?

If your considering WG at all I would hold out for the platinum. Beautiful watch with nice heft. You really cannot go wrong with any metal or color. Probably my best advise is to buy the watch which is in the best condition and complete regardless of the metal.

I actually think more so in person. Couple times I've encountered Patek RG I had to make sure it's RG looking in different lights.. it is very close to yellow gold with a slight reddish tint. I actually think pictures accentuate it more than real life.

For the Patek 3940 go for the rose gold. Patek rose gold is just sweet and pleasant. Not too reddish like some other makes.
