The original "tool" watches were only in stainless steel. Then Rolex realized they could increase profits by adding all PM. This was followed on in the introduction of the gold/stainless steel models. Why people tend to dislike the 2-tone Daytona for instance, could be attributed to the above principle. How can you have a 'tool' or sports watch in anything but stainless steel?

Very interesting thread. I been away from Rolex for some time. Recently started looking at a TT Blusey to acquire for my collection. Noticed that the second hand prices have risen a lot.

116613LB is in a class of it's own, one of the few desirable TT's and will hold a good value.

Looking as a reference to past history...
A far better question would be "do you think your dollars will buy what you need in the future or will you need more of them?

I would agree that all Professional models are up--even TT models. I bought my 116613LB from David SW a couple years ago BNIB with my name on the card. He is now selling them for 2K more than in 2016.

TT have become stronger with the current scarcity which exists in the sports Rolex market. They used to be absolutely abysmal (Rolex market that is, still not bad given the typical resale of luxury watches). I truly believe they will never have the same resale as SS due to demand, especially if Rolex keeps up the SS shortages.

A rising tide lifts all boats. I think the rise in SS will bring up TT. Long term I think SS will be more collectible.

SS in general for the sports models has been more
collectible in the past ...

100% agree with you!
Slowly TT will become the best on retain value!

A number of TTs I really like. Included are the 36mm DJs but as DJs they usually take a hit so by cheaply. I'm also fond of the Black insert GMT II, the Bluesy, the Sky D and finally the CHNR. I'd tend to believe that most in the list will do pretty well. The Daytona TT with white dial is a great looking watch as well imho. Not so certain how it does in terms of value retention. I'd say buy well (but that applies to all watches).

While this still holds true, I have seen prices of BNIB TT Datejusts, Daytonas and Subs increase at least several hundred from last year. While the steel sports have seen the biggest increase, nearly every Rolex has gone up in price. I’m an idiot for not buying some watches last year waiting for a good price on a white DaytonaC. I passed up a couple of black Daytonas for $15k. A Hulk for $7.5k. Hell I could’ve bought a SubC for $6-6.5k. Even if wouldn’t have kept them, I could’ve sold all for a profit.

At the end of last year I thought this situation would come to an end after Baselworld but I was very wrong. This looks like it’s the new normal whether it’s due to a combination of less production, more demand from long time owners, more discretionary income, profits from the markets or many new first time Rolex buyers or anyone of those factors.

Rolex and the other watch brands have been heavily marketing on social media recently and I definitely think this has introduced people to these brands who otherwise wouldn’t have been interested in a watch. People are showing off watches more than ever especially on IG.

That is a great question... and probably more dollars
would be needed to acquire these pieces in the future
if history is of any precedence.
They usually don’t go down in price only up “ The Rolex Way “
and time will only tell how much ... :thumb-sup

Present and Future value of TT vs Stainless Steel Professional models !

I came back around to TT after exhausting the SS models and think this is a timeless classic...

Thank you! I feel it is really subtle with white dial and the black rings really distinguish it form the modern day varients.
