Anyone Built a New House? Here Is Our Build

We sold our house on the lake and bought a lot out in the pines on a hill on the Pelican River and Mill Pond. Construction is finally underway. I'll post some photos of the progress as we go. I'd like to hear your experiences building, especially when it comes to problems and things you'd do differently.

My brother is a General Contractor in Fargo and is doing the build. Here they are hanging floor joists and capping the first level. One more floor goes on top of this.

While digging the hole, we found two layers of small rocks about four feet down. My oldest daughter has a degree in Geology and said they are from the glaciers receding across Minnesota 15,000 and 10,000 years ago.

Looking good.

What are you going to be putting in for heat?

I will be starting a major remodel in February. Given all the old crap we will have to address in the remodel, I would rather build new.

Can't wait to see the updates.

I would put whatever switches necessary in the master bedroom to be able to turn on all outside floodlights from the bedroom. (should you hear noise outside at night).
Note: When I hear a noise outside during the night I usually turn on all the floodlights and leave them on until morning.
Try to keep the front door lights a fair distance from the front door so when you open the doors at night the bugs are not waiting for you.
Looking Good, Good Luck.

That's good advice I can reach a bank of switches from my bed to turn on all the perimeter outside lighting.

Forced air gas furnace plus a gas fireplace on each floor in the living and family rooms.

That is a great idea. I had not thought of it. Thank you. Most of our outside visitors will be deer, bears, foxes and turkeys.

Man, you need a wood burning fireplace. I miss mine so badly.

I’d run internet cable everywhere. To each tv, to your thermostats, etc. it is cheap to do while being built.

Looks fantastic, congratulations in advance

About the only thing I'd have done differently on a new build is radiant floor heat. When you build is the best time to do it.

There are wolves. We often see wolf scat in the woods with deer hair mixed in. There are Trumpeter Swans, Sandhill Cranes, geese and ducks in the pond and river. On rare occasions, mountain lions are seen.

Our previous house was 44 years old. We replaced windows, shingles, siding, etc. The repair and upgrade list was never ending.

We built our current home. You really have to stay on top of the crews. Since your brother is the contractor, you won't have many issues. A nice touch in the bathrooms is radiant floor heating . Also, heated towel racks . They are great in the winter. Good luck in your build ,looks like a nice wooded lot .

Joey, I've done a couple of builds during my lifetime and you will always learn something. One thing for sure is you never think of everything. I do have one piece of advice. Seriously consider a Geothermal heating and cooling system. It's not too late in your build. It's the one thing I did in my last build that saved us thousands of dollars a year and virtually eliminated our use of fossil fuels. Very efficient.

Good luck with the build.
