Apple iPhone alternative
Hi all,
We have a large thread on the new iPhones but wanted to start one for alternative options. I’ve always had apple products but their price structure is getting out of whack in my opinion..... So, what alternatives do people have? Any suggestions, advice etc Specifically phone alternatives. Thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I agree that their prices are becoming ludicrous but I’m so invested in their ecosystem that I’m just go to have to begrudgingly keep paying their prices.

The last iPhone I had was a 5S, I now have a Google Pixel 2, it's fabulous, wait about a month and have a look at the Pixel 3 or wait for the next Galaxy.
I dont understand when people mention "stuck in the Apple ecosystem" I have a Mac Book Pro, iPad and a Pixel 2, they all work together. Stop making excuses to yourselves.

When I worked I had to carry a iPhone and my personal phone was a Samsung. Got to compare and have never looked back. I am a Samsung fan. I don't like Apple for it's marketing and the cult like devotion of many users. Battery life has always been lacking and with each new generation they say it has improved but is still unacceptable. My children are devoted to the Apple products and all of their friends use Apple products. Only one of my adult associates and friends use Apple unless it is a mandatory work phone. Look at some of the other options.

Unfortunately there is no viable alternative for a consumer smart phone...

The issue about ecosystem isn’t what you own solely. It is also what everyone else in your social circle uses. Have you tried to do a group text with someone who is running Android when the majority are on iMessage?

I agree with the above, my work phone is an iPhone my personal phone is the Galaxy S8. I personally love the galaxy, Im not tied into their ecosystem (can sideload etc.) And it's of good quality.
As others have mentioned I also don't like their cult like approach to things Apple has (almost since the company's founding). Plus the iPhone is the device my parents use, or if my granny were alive I would give her an iPhone to keep things simple. To anyone else I would recommend an Android device (I'm not even a Google fan boy!). Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk |

There are well known alternatives that are well used for both platforms, Whatsapp or FaceBook Messenger for instance.

I would think folks who pay 10K for a watch shouldn't have a problem paying for a 1K phone (either Apple or Samsung).
I'm disappointed in their lack of innovation. |

The master stroke by Apple was the release of the iPhone XR. That will put the worry up all Android manufacturers. It is a "Flagship lite" addition. Absolutely brilliant, they set the bar and price perfectly.

I recently picked up a Galaxy S9 plus (more expensive version) for $799 (at Costco). That's 20% less than the iPhone X. Actually, I have a 256gb micros SD card in a phone with 64GB so it's closer to the $1150 iphone X.
Obviously the pricing has to do with supply and demand but you can get a good deal on a phone with comparable/better specs. |

They create the desire but price it painfully high for some, condition the market that phones need to cost $1000 now and then say, "you know what, here's one for the rest of you" and suddenly $750 or whatever for a phone seems reasonable and cheap. I think they named the iPhone XS appropriately, too. Last edited by tritium8; 16 September 2018 at 01:44 AM.. Reason: $750, not $850 |

What alternative? They are all priced the same more or less. The Google one exists to lock you in to the Google platform so they can track you 24/7/365. Android has a bunch of issues with viruses and the 2nd hand value of a Samsung is horrible.
I priced out a iPhone Xs Max with 256GB and AppleCare - it came to over $1,500. I'm sticking with my iPhone X for now. |

When it comes to expandable memory, yes, I agree that android phones do a better job in that department. I wish Apple offered expandable memory. |

I used to use iPhones, but I despise the crap DRM and overly simplified controls (and lack of control for the most part). After using Adroid, I would never go back to using an iPhone. Google Pixel is good too, but a few issues. Be careful of some of the Chinese products as they have been accused of stealing data. |

Design wise Apple is and always was #1, I just don't like iOS that much...
The new large X does offer the nicest screen ever though, I might sell my OnePlus and get that new thing but I need to figure out how to move all my stuff over to a completely foreign operating system. |

You are aware that some top rated apps in the Apple store where removed because a security firm noted that user data was being sent to a server in China? Data that should have been "sand boxed"? This myth that Apple is so much more secure than Android is.....well, a myth. Yes, apple does a better job of limiting freedom and choice of it's users; however one virus/bad actor hits the entire apple eco system. The fragmentation and customization of Android actually protects it's users (especially those who act responsibly).

My monthly bill went down when I switched to paying full freight for the phone and going on the plan where you turn in your phone every 2 years for the new one.
Versus previously paying the lower subsidized price but having a higher monthly cost for service. I tried a Samsung galaxy a few years ago and it felt cheap and definitely not on the same level as apple products. I’m sure their new products are better, but Apple just works, and that’s all I want out of my tech. To work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I went from an iPhone 6 to an X. The most noticeable changes were:
1) battery life was much improved; and 2) no home button; sweep up to close an app or to change apps. Otherwise, not much difference. I do like the X, though.

I recently switched to a Galaxy and after 2 days had to go back to the iPhone due to this issue. I use group chats over text at work daily, and this was a showstopper for me.

I'm curious if this is just an American thing. I run into this often as well but when chatting with family or international friends we always use Google chat or Whatsapp. Do the members in other countries find they chat more using 3rd party apps or text? I guess I could start a poll.
