Yes, apple does a better job of limiting freedom and choice of it's users; however one virus/bad actor hits the entire apple eco system. The fragmentation and customization of Android actually protects it's users (especially those who act responsibly).
OK, don't take my word for it then, read any reviews/recommendation/analysis from major software security firms. Yes, Android has APIs, allows distribution of apps via third parties, making more "open" and customizable, but all that "freedom" comes with a price of being a more unsecure platform. The number of malwares that have surfaced on iOS are dwarfed by those on the Android platform. That is not a myth, that is a fact.

Now, if you are an advanced user, you can surely customize an Android phone much more than an iPhone. Have at it, however, for the average user, the iPhone is simply a more secure platform. At this time, at least.

The reason Android sustains more malicious attacks is because it has a significantly greater global market share. Something like 80-85%. It's a game of numbers.

Samsung and Apple have roughly the same market share and I would argue the same level of security (the reason IT departments typically only certify those two).

Having said all that, I'm not going to argue that Apple doesn't make a great phone. I am also happy to have bought into the company at <$100/share. I just don't buy the hype that it's so much better than Android. I prefer Android, simple as that. I've rooted/run custom ROMs on phones for years (until recently). I did but my mom an iPhone, though.

Seriously

My watch is something that will last. Phones are disposable. I run them till they die but they only last so long. I’m glad it doesn’t bother you. Personally I’d rather use that money elsewhere.

I like the Samsung Galaxy line of phones.

I'm currently on the S9+.

I love Android.

Get a galaxy, pixel for pure Android, or possibly something from one plus.

Don't bother with most other Android phones.

I started at the first iPhone. Switched to android 4 years ago. Not going back until Apple gets revolutionary again. Making the phones bigger and adding features that have been available on Android phones for years isn't enough.

I'm here with these.

I flit between Galaxy and Pixel. It is quite obvious that some of the comments here about Android are from people that haven't had a Flagship Android phone for some years.

Apple iPhone alternative

Lots of good comments, I’m not saying the new iPhone is not good but Face ID is not for me and as I said £999 starting price for the XS

Plus AppleCare as I would probably drop it at some point. Also what p****s me off about Apple and most tech is their quality control is poor, always end up settling for the least bothersome fault which at the money is difficult to swallow.

My 6S will probably be my last iPhone.

I have a Note 8 and love it. Most likely getting the 9 in a few months for the bigger 4000mah battery and 1TB storage. Loyal Samsung user for many years, it just works for me.

Same here with the Note 8. I love it.

I was an early adopter of the iPhone, and I stayed with it through the iPhone 4. Then I switched over to Samsung Galaxy S5, stuck with that for a couple years, then get my toe back into Apple waters with the iPhone 6. I became so frustrated with Apple and their restrictive software and lackluster cameras, that I rushed back to Samsung. It's so much more powerful.

My son has the iPhone, and he really regrets choosing that over the Samsung. At our next upgrade, he's switching to the Galaxy.

It’s the size now also, if I wanted to carry around a flat screen TV I’d buy one, they are no longer pocketable.

I miss my BlackBerry. The Bold 9930 running BB7. Once they went to BB10 and then Android it was over for me.

I have an iPhone 7 now only because my wife and kids have them. Path of least resistance. I’m a real Apple fanboy and have been using Macs since the 1980s. iPhones naturally integrate beautifully with all the other Apple products. But if it wasn’t for the family pressure I’d probably have a flip phone.

Is the 8 still worth buying?

I have a 6s and wondered if it’s worth changing, it’s still got the home button and not Face ID which I don’t like.

Yes!

I ignored all the X hype last year and bought the 8 Plus. It’s perfect, has the home button and I’ve absolutely no reason to upgrade.

$600 in 2007 for 8GB which is $729 in todays dollars adjusted for inflation. And you had a 2 year contract meaning the rest was subsidized and you paid for it with increased monthly cell phone fees and you were locked into a carrier. Today it its a vastly better phone and today's price isnt not astronomically more than the price at launch and you don't have to have a contract.

I wish a car only cost $400 more than a decade ago especially with a decade's worth of new tech inside.

So buy away and don't feel bad about it

To be fair, I think that the current crop of flagship phones, be them Android or Apple are much of a muchness, they all work brilliantly well with minor advantages and disadvantages on both side. I would just pick a phone that runs the operating system you prefer/enjoy the most.

There you go, being all rational. There’s no place for reason on the Internet! The internet is for fanboys and trolls. :)

There's a lot of truth to this. However, one major difference is that there are so many more free apps for Android then there are for iPhones. This translates into more functionality and usefulness with an Android, in my experience.

Not sure I agree.

A new iPhone in 2007 was £269 so £354 in today’s money. A new base iPhone today is double that.

It’s not just the phones. It’s £90 for a ‘pencil’, £170 for an iPad case, £400+ for a smart watch and £1500+ for a laptop.

I love the brand and will still buy but the Apple Tax is getting silly.
