Why the Fifty-Eight is the star of Baselworld...

1. GMT SchmeMT. Everyone is doing one (even TAG) and let's be honest - we all want a 16710 with 70-hour movement and GlideLock clasp, right?

2. The Rolex Submariner has become a parody. No longer a tool watch but a piece of jewellery that non-WIS buy with their first bonus cheque. Just witness the "I scratched my Sub!!!", "My best friend dropped my Sub!!!" posts on this very forum.

3. The Tudor Fifty-Eight is the Submariner we've all been waiting for. Classic proportions, just the right amount of fautina and a price that means it'll take the knocks without the owner having a nervous breakdown.
Of course Bill Yao did it first, but being late to the party is better than not turning up at all.

4. With this watch, Tudor announced that the era of Wrist Clocks is officially over.

I used to own a Tudor Blue Snowflake. Perfect go-to watch but as the prices on them went stupid, I was too scared to wear it. And take it near water? No way.

The Fifty-Eight will become my new Snowflake and I was the first to call my AD and place an order this morning. I suggest you do the same.

I’m impressed with the 58 as well and will be getting one. Perfect vintage proportions and looks with modern upgrades. I’m swapping my BB 41mm for this one. Irresistible.

Gotta admit, it is pretty tempting. I was so impressed when Tudor introduced the BB36, and not their trend is continuing toward the smaller watch designs. Bravo!

Has this not always been the case? For me it was the most recognisable Rolex as a kid and the watch that instilled the bug in me. I have bought every Sea-Dweller since my first one in 2008 but never had any intention of doing any deep diving with them. You really feel that historically it was used as a tool watch?

My only issue with Tudor is that it seems like it has gotten a lot of inspiration from a certain Rolex watch without improving on it. Quality for $ its probably better value but it feels like going for second best.

Dying to see one in person and expect it will win me over instantly! Although we need colored versions soon

But gotta say: what's the difference between point #2 and being afraid to wear a watch cause of perceived value.

I'll stick with the BBN Eta I've got. No need for the smaller version (nice as it may be).

I’m on the same page. My wrist is 6.5 and the BBN ETA Rose fits me perfectly. I don’t need a smaller watch. Plus I like the uniqueness and the Rose and Smiley Charm. I think the Rose dials are going to become even more coveted as the entire Tudor line just lacks the personality of the roses. I also think the ETA will be a more reliable movement. The new “thin” in house movement sounds a bit concerning-Beta testing on the public. Don’t get me wrong I love all Tudors but I see nothing that dethrones the very limited Black Rose.

I agree the 58 is the standout from BW 2018. 39mm perfect size vintage / modern fusion Black Bay that Ive been waiting for. Had the Black Bay blue but found it a bit large at 41mm with weird 22mm lug widths. Hopefully the 58 is better at 39mm and 20mm? Lug width for straps and whatnot..

I think I can get behind the gold accents on this one. Born to dare haha

Can’t wait to get one!

Perfect size! Great post OP!

Do you think the Pepsi GMT will come in this size any day?

I have a sub but I still like this. I might consider getting one of these to be my beater watch. I’d prefer a black strap over a brown strap, but that can easily be dealt with.

I like it - don't like the crown though. The crowns ruin all of their recent/new watches.

no, that will cut into Rolex GMT sales ;)

In all honesty, I'll be the first in line or one if they did just that.

Cool watch and I am glad Tudor is touching all the bases for size. Those that think 39 is perfect will be happy, those who like 41 will continue to be happy. Personal preference is just that and I don't think it is necessary to put other down for liking larger, smaller or right in the middle watches. Life is not one size fits all. The larger watches are here to stay and so are the smaller ones in different models. Good for Tudor.

Agree. This 39mm is the star of this year's Baselworld.

“My friend dropped my sub!!!!!” Post? As an example of the sub no longer being a tool watch? Lol, that’s kind of a stretch. The watch isn’t made to be dropped onto tile, cement or even a carpet for that matter.

If you dropped an expensive power tool on the ground and it broke, you wouldn’t say “oh it’s a tool, that’s supposed to happen!”. You have to take care of your things, regardless of what they are and how much they cost.

Anyway, otherwise, for the most part I agree. Many of the reasons I bought my BB to begin with. It’s easily the best dollar for dollar watch I own, id imagine this one will be similar.

Great post 🥇 I agree the sub is now more jewelry than a tool and personally I am a bit fed up with Rolex antics of low/no supply, multi year waitlists and the pricing...Pepsi gmt at $9,250 ehh you can get a hell of a lot around $10k and I am not sure a Pepsi gmt would be my first choice (and if it was when can I get one? Maybe year 2025?)

I wouldn't (couldn't) go over 40 mm and even feel that the 40 mm maxi cases look a bit vulgar on me, so this is truly a great option. I just wish that Rolex did this. I'd even go for the 37 mm Yachtmaster if I didn't feel the current models look a bit too feminine.
So maybe, we'll see.
