The fella is from London. Big cities have too many VIPs to contend with to get desirable watches. Doesn't London have all those rich Ruski oligarchs wandering the streets? I am in Los Angeles - same drill.

To the OP, you just have to "go grey and pay" if you really want a Pepsi. You might get lucky if you happen to be in some out of the way area on vacation or work and there is a small AD.

But, yeah....for us regular joes, "go grey and pay."

There's plenty of other options.

Tudor is one, and the other 50 watch houses would love to sell some stuff too.

I feel your frustration. But I can't help but wonder if Rolex would be this popular and its resale value would be as high if every single model were readily accessible? Would it even be nearly as satisfying if you could just go into a store and buy from from the display case, as you could with a lot of other brands, even high ends ones (i.e., Vacheron)?

This will be a mass produced piece and I think it will be accessible (just not right now). The BLNR and LV where both accessible before all the hype and allocations, I saw them many times at many ADs and tried them on, looked at them, etc for months (years) before I got the LV. The Daytona fiasco was to get people worked up about about SS Professional watches, SS SKyD are already trickling in and so is the rest of the professional line. The Sub, GMT, and DJ is their bread and butter, this will be the main GMT II watch and for Rolex to hold back would be a very dumb move.

There are tons of other watches, each as beautiful in its own way, lots of brands as good, if not better to choose from. It’s only a watch.

Join the resistance movement and let the ADs and Grey Market eat them. I assure you prices will drop and they will be available. As long as folks are willing to be desperate and pay ludricous high demand prices, this game will continue.

I was just looking at a jeweler I know personally, Grey market, and was appalled to see a new Hulk whored for $13,000, and yet more appalled that someone will in fact buy it. I frankly find it beyond intriguing that an object is that essential to have that you help fund what is basically a legal black market labeled Grey and ADs with ridiculous profits.

Soon I think you should be able to go to pretty much any AD and their should be a SS sub or GMT available. This stupid game their playing will end soon if they want to keep their fanbase (both loyal and casual) happy. Another forum member recently wrote strange times indeed to be a Rolex fan, its true.

This isn’t exactly an unusual trend.

All I will say is now is not a very good time to be a Rolex watch enthusiast starting out.

Despite my collection I too am facing difficult buying what I want.

All i will say is, these things come in waves. At some point in the near future dealers will have overstock or regular stock and Rolex will find themselves in a deflated position.

We are at a peak of demand and limited supply. There is a hornets nest but it won’t always be this way.

Rough seas have pushed me to buying up other brands. Rolex will do just fine, I’ll be back in the game plenty of times in the future.

The guy is pissed and I don't blame him, you are a customer and being treated like its a privilege to buy your product. Understandable to a certain extent to maintain brand prestige, but if this becomes the norm a lot of customers will be turned off. Not everyone cares about maintaining future value, and not every watch (Rolex) is going to maintain that value. Some folks just want to walk into an AD, be treated with respect, and buy a nice watch that they like, without all the games.

the current shortage of supply is artificially created. I brought 2 LVs last year, one in January another one in June, no wait time at all. I even got 6% discount on my first one. everything started went crazy in the second half of last year. my local AD has not received a LV in 4 months now.

Yes, same thing with me with similar discount, except I bought 1 and it was in 2016, plenty of them just sitting at ADs, BLNR also, not plenty but you can easily buy one if you wanted one.

And so it begins....

OP: genuinely sorry to hear this. Hang in there and try to develop some relationships at businesses that really want your business. If in fact there is such a thing. Good luck,

Also considering moving if watches are really important to you.
London is about the worst place ever for Rolex. It really is .
