As for the matching watches/clothes. Most men dress so poorly the type of watch, be it dress, be it sports, makes absolutely no difference. A classy calatrava doesnt make a bad suit or look suddenly look good.
Right on.

Good thread....

I often wondered this myself. I used to wear my dress watches with dress or dressy attire. But that was in the past with visiting clients or in the office or going to a nice establishment be it going to the symphony, the theater or nice restaurant etc. . That has all changed post COVID, and if I did not wear my dress pieces casually they would never be worn.

Understand where you are coming from. IMO playing with straps is an easy solution to make watches more casual. A brown or blue strap often makes a watch look much more casual than a black strap, certainly if the watch in itself is more classic/dressy.

This is always a divisive topic, I'm in the "do what makes you happy" camp.

That is exactly what I did with my Journe, swapping out the black strap for a blue one...

Perfect thread to show that watches and clothes don’t make the man.

5205G with a somewhat casual wear=chinos, shirt and a cashmere sweater.

To me these dress pieces are to be worn in the cold season or on special events during the summer (thinking of weddings, birthdays etc).

I have worn my 1815 chrono with a bathing suit and flip flops and i have worn my Pam111 on a rubber strap with a suit.

But not everyone can pull it off like I can.

I have found that if you’re expecting fine service, being well-dressed makes a difference. As regards a watch, I wear what I like, which is often a gold watch on a leather strap for formal occasions.

I wear my 5320G 24/7 as my insurance company insists upon it.. Levis.. suits.. pyjamas.... the whole notion of sports or dress is ridiculous. Wear what your want when your want - except in the shower!

Honestly, just wear what makes you happy. I wore my IWC Portugieser every single day for years before I got into Rolex and Patek. It's also considered one of the dressier pieces, and I work in tech. I haven't had to dress formally for a really long time. In fact, I haven't worn a suit since college career fair.

Ssshhhh! I prefer IWC to Rolex. Second car dealers, fresh faced financiers and estate agents don’t wear them. The SS Portugeiser case is a bit of a tin from the side but I love the size and the face. The only reason I bought a perpetual calendar IWC as an upgrade was that the hands are not easy to read in all lighting conditions so discrete glances at the wrist during boring meetings was not subtle!

I'm all for it! In this day and age, if one does not enjoy their watches with whatever attire of their choosing, there is a high likelihood that they will collect dust.

This was taken one sunny Friday afternoon in English Bay, Vancouver. Was wearing shorts, a t shirt and a pear of reliable brown penny loafers. Perched under the shade of an old tree, wine and charcuterie in a picnic basket, an interesting book in my bag, and some pre-rolled B.C. Special for the sunset

I'm not too fond of the look of a watch with casual clothes at all. Of course, you can use to wear this as you want. But I think a watch is a useless thing nowadays. I have a smartphone where I can see the time, etc.

Apologies in advance for digressing, but the 3940 is the perfect representation of Patek in my opinion. Congrats for having that in your collection. Trumps any of the Patek sports watches; speaking as a 5712 owner.

If I didn't wear my Patek's with casual clothes, I'd never get a chance to wear one! I can count on one hand how many times I've had an occasion to 'dress up' since the pandemic started.

I have a smartphone where I can see the time, etc. Except only as part of look in classic style. My style is more sporty than casual btw I order my clothes on the forstepstyle website. So the watch does not fit into my look. Of course, only if it's not a smartwatch. They have much more advantages. Inappropriate accessories can hinder your style.
