[Old Expat Beast]

Any Smiths owners or collectors here, I wonder?

I've been wanting to pick one up for ages, as I grew up near where they were made in England, and my father had one. One of the guys in Japan who usually sells me Seikos had this available the other day so I snapped it up.

The solid 9ct gold case was made by Dennison, who also made cases for Rolex, Tudor and Omega at the time (and JLC I think), and was hallmarked in Birmingham in 1959. I can't believe how well preserved it is, and the movement is putting up respectable numbers on the timegrapher, too (+25/210/0.0) with a healthy 42-hour power reserve.

Hoping to see some other Imperials, as well as De Luxe models, Everests, Empires, Astrals, W10s and others if here anyone has them

I commented in the What Are You Wearing Today thread, this is an absolute beauty of a watch and that paperwork and box looks almost mint. Such a shame that they went out of business in the early 70's.............I have two of the Timefactors Smiths "re-issues", they are great watches for the money and a tribute to the Smiths brand but not in this league

Here's my two. The Air Ministry has a lovely vintage vibe and feels completely different to the Military, despite having the same case

My Smiths 1968 W10, Awesome piece of English history

Ive since learnt, they were worn during the Falklands war and reissued during the 1st gulf war as the G10's failed due to the conditions, not bad for a watch dated 1968.

I think this is quite a early 6RG model from the mid 40s ( after WWll), there isn’t a great deal of information about them available. And considering it’s size it extremely legible too .

Cheers fella, I missed the boat but eventually picked this one up, They've all had a hard life and poor relumes when reissued, I huge dent was in the side of the lug but for £200 I had the dial tidied and the cast laser welded, it was well worth doing,

Well, I guess they're Smiths in name, as they're licensed, but from what I know they're made in Hong Kong with Japanese movements, so while I appreciate the effort in resurrecting the name, I'm not sure I think of them as "real" Smiths watches. I'd happily wear one, though.

Ahh I see. Thank you for your perspective Adam. I swear I have seen a few older smiths watches while shopping with my mother at the local thrift stores but I never knew about their provenance. What a shame that my ignorance caused me to miss out on lovely vintage time pieces
