There is a saying and it is not by statute or wealth etc, it’s by being a good person.

After struggling with the effects of a brain injury, including being unable to do my job any longer, the psychologist I was seeing one day felt it was time to tell me this: “You can CHOOSE to thrive in your new circumstances.”
Something clicked in my head and heart, and I made that choice. He was right. |

I choose to ride 150,000 miles around North America on my motorcycle. I became a ski patroller doing basic first aid, then the director of the ski and mountain bike patrol at my resort. We sold the family home in town of 26 years and built our dream home in the pine woods. And every step of the way, I remembered the doc’s words, that my life was a series of choices. I can honestly say that I’ve never once wished I was back in the Emergency Department waiting for terrible things to happen to people. |

She did not suffer trauma like you did in the physical sense, but she did in the emotional sense. She left her career of 20+ years at family and children services where she served on a national child sex trafficking task force. The things she endured, the things she saw and heard are unimaginable. No person should be in that line of work that long. It takes a toll. She left it all behind about a year ago, and is a much happier, healthier person. Lesson: letting go of the past is a process, you have to be ready to receive your future. Had lunch w/ my dad yesterday. He turns 92 in January. It reminded me of an important life lesson.
My dad ruled the roost at our house. Although mom was also a disciplinarian, dad was the tip of the spear. They made a great team for 67 years. I gave my dad way too many opportunities & reasons to punish me growing up and he made sure to follow thru. I was not beat or tortured but dad had no problem letting us know who's boss. But there where just a couple rare occasions where punishment was doled out, but I hadn't done anything wrong. When my dad found out he was mistaken he came to me to apologize. I was shocked. The guy with the most power in the household had the humility to admit when he was wrong. Might be the most important lesson I ever learned. dP

Some great stories here guys...
An old guy I met when I first moved to LA and who hung out with us was in his 80s and he'd played professional baseball, football and basketball during his long life. His saying was "life is a just a series of adjustments". This was us back then and Lou in the middle, and the other picture was his football team pic. Last name Fink.

As the captain of an FDNY truck company with lots of type A personalities I always told them to “do the right thing, even when no one is looking”

I have another, directly in regards to what spurred this thread, the Wagyu deal.
Just being expensive doesn’t make something nice or enjoyable to you. Life is full of really great moments, experiences, and yes, even things that are not pricey, but very valuable. |

I've done some stupid things, gritted and endured some things and dared myself to scare myself and so far I've lived through it all.

I’ve referred to my Mennonite upbringing here in the past and this reminds me of a little gem my mother used to use on us as kids …. “Your sins will find you out” That always scared the begeepers out of me. So did church |
