Wow, what a history!

Ya’ can’t buy that kind of class. That’s the kind of patina we all dream of.

Also, I don’t care what folks say about Rolex movements, but they are prettier than anything from Patek.

Wonderful story! I hope my son feels about getting my 16660 as you did your Dad's 5513. Congratulations.

Great thread. I got to it a little late, but I'm blown away. Your dad sounds like a pretty amazing dude, I'm sorry you didn't get more time with him.

I lost my dad last year and found his Seiko 6105 diver that he had put away several years before. I remember it being on his wrist every day when I was growing up, he'd let me shake it to wind it up in the mornings. My mom gave it to him after his first one was stolen out of his work locker, the one he'd worn through Vietnam... He wore his new one every day after that. He was a Deputy Sheriff, then got shot and had to retire; he went through several cancer treatments in the late-70s, started SCUBA diving with it, hunted, fished, shot competition pistol and trap, camped... You name it, he did it with his Seiko. Almost every picture I see of him has it on his wrist.

I'm glad you've got this to look back on him and to pass down. The most important thing is to keep it safe and well-maintained; but also, wear it often. I wear my dad's (just like you feel with the 5513, my dad's Seiko is not mine; it's his) quite a bit still, and I'll pass it to my son, along with several of my own. When I finally acquire my own Rolex, he'll get that one, as well.

Wear in good health, and thanks for sharing.

Amazing story as well. Thanks for sharing. Any watch you can pass down among the generations is priceless. My fathers watch will always be his in my mind. I wonder if my daughter will think of it as her fathers watch or her grandfathers watch. Guess I won't be around to find out.

With any luck, she'll know it was both of yours

Gilt hands

LA Watch works was able to fully restore the original flat gilt hands from my fathers 5513 with color matched vintage lume. They did a great job matching the color of the lume on the dial markers. In the sun the dial has a brown color to it that you can see in the last oblique picture.

Phillip Ridley is installing the hands onto the watch today and he just sent me these pictures. Can't wait to see it myself tomorrow! For me it's really special to have my fathers gilt restored with all of the original pieces. It's been a process but I think we are finally there.

Will post some more picts once I get the watch back.

trying to capture the brown in the dial

in low light dial looks jet black. in bright sunlight it takes on a dark chocolate brown color. Great in person but challenging to capture in a picture.

Gilt era lume

Color quickly fades over a minute or two.
