So fair to say if he had bought it back then he would have paid maybe USD1-2K above MSRP if that.
Now he has no watch,is still waiting for one,and need to come up with just a few more dollars to get one...

Well hindsight is always 20/20

Better buy one now and be done with it. Start enjoying the watch intead of waiting. If you had bought one at grey prices even just 3 years ago, you would have been enjoying the watch with a good increase in resale value should the need have ever arisen.

I have a first gen Porsche 986 Boxster S in pristine condition that I could not trade for a 116500 Daytona if I wanted to. Luckily I already have my 116500 panda so I can just go ahead and enjoy both within thinking about any of their values since I am not selling either one. Life is too short. Better to enjoy what I have now while I still can. I do not want to reach an age where I can afford everything I want to buy but am jus too old to enjoy them. That is just the truth!

It’s a deal at 50k. Wait until it’s discontinued and the replacement is 75k out of the gate.

Do not disagree. If an OP Turquoise 41 mm goes for $40,000, then a 116500LN (White) should be well above $50k.

There are few if any NIB white dial 116500's for sale at any of the popular TRF trusted sellers right now. It could be that something has really shaken up their supply pipeline, or they've seen some crazy Chrono24 asking prices and have pulled their inventory offline to reprice it.

Chrono24 asking prices might indicate an up or down trend, but I don't believe that's where watches are actually trading. Chrono24 sellers figure if they've got someone who will pay them $55k for a 116500 that they'll be able source one and still make money.

I agree that Chrono24 prices are not a good representation of selling prices but as you said they give a good indication about market direction.
Also sorting prices from low to high, and looking at the cheapest prices is a better reflection of "real price" rather than looking at the most expensive listings. I have followed the cheapest listings for the 116500 white over the last few days, and most of them were marked reserved or sold shortly. I guess those remaining with "lower" prices are not real listings as we know that there are many "fake" listings and the dealers don't have the watch in stock or try to source it afterwards.

I purchased my first 116520 in 2006-2007. I picked it up off my grey guy BNIB for a lot more than a 20% premium. List at the time was $7900. Used at the time would cost you $10k. I sold my Y series white dial for a little over $10k, to purchase a black dial, in 2008.

i remember looking at 2010-2014 or so and from what i saw there was almost no premium. the search function is broken here but there are listings from 2010 that showed them between 9-10.5k, while msrp looks to have been 9.9-10.4 in 2010 (unless what i'm looking at is wrong)

I remember at the end of it's run, the 116520 was selling used for about retail, which was $12,400, the same as the 116500 was introduced at.

I would not wait. If you really want one, it is better not to time the market, and just jump in.

I think it depends on your ceiling. If you’re willing to pay 55k but not 60, then you have some time to wait and see what happens. I would monitor it very closely, because 50k seems to me like a point that the white dial will cross. The higher it climbs, the tougher it gets at retail and more it pushes the secondary. Once it cross 55-60, new retail buyers will be dumping them to grey sellers to cash in on a 40k payday.

Agreed 100%, i have two Daytonas now, i don’t understand the grey market prices… great watch but doesn’t make sense to pay so much for it

As 2013 was the year for the 116506, “expectations “ (no one really knows) fueled by market makers is for a “new” version …

Either the “profit” will get eaten up by inflation or the prices will come down. 3 years ago the same hype had befallen vintage Daytonas, and look at them now. None of this is forever.

I think if you really want to put energy into something, don’t try to get a stupid watch that’ll make you even 80,000 $ in upside and instead, get your life to a place where you can afford not to care about these things. Your happiness and how you cater to your needs should really not rest on your ability to make 80,000 $ on the back of that one hype watch you got lucky with (or on the 2 or three). As it shouldn’t rely on other windfall revenues and nice to haves. Seriously, in the time the Daytona appreciated from 18,000 $ to whatever it is now, I for one have arranged my professional life in a way where it would be easier for me to afford it at grey prices now than it was for me at the lower values back then. Better to invest into yourself and proper investment assets, rather than spend your time glued to Chrono24 for something that might sound like a big number by itself, but that won’t get you anywhere in the way of sustaining your existence over any reasonable period of time or realizing anything else that would be noteworthy.

Sorry for that JacksonStone, I did not mean to lessen your excitement in any way with that, in fact it’s quite adorable.

As said earlier by Train-Time, it’s better to not worry about this. Play the long game instead and forgo excessive materialism. Happiness comes from within, from relationships and experiences. No slab of steel will make you feel joy in a vacuum.

I’ve been miserable for years myself, chasing possessions and thinking they were factors defining my worth. Then I met a wonderful person, and I’ve become a more complete man in ways I never thought possible.

I still enjoy watches and especially Rolex, but I find myself more successful with getting more skills and being promoted at my company than chasing ADs and greys prices.
