A walk around a dying part of town

Back in the days, the Deep Ellum part of downtown Dallas was the place to be.
It was full of life and the streets were often blocked to cars during the evenings.
Sadly, it is a dying part of town now and nothing more than a memory to many people of my generation.

I took a walk around it last night and took a few photos with my iPhone and edited them with Instagram.

Thanks for sharing, very nice photos. Why is this town dying? Did it happen during the 2008 financial crisis?

Thanks guys.

Vernon, you can read more about it at the link that's posted in my original post. Here it is again so you do not have to scroll.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Ellum,_Dallas,_Texas

I think it was a combination of an increase in the crime rate and the smoking ban. Those two really took a toll on it.

Thanks guys.

Believe it or not, I had my DSLR with me but I did not even take it out of the bag.

Amazing how good that little iPhone can be.

Very cool pictures

Can you (briefly) explain how you make this this "old style" feature on you pics.?

Thanks

Fascinating. I have never seen the area, but know of its musical history. I have a CD from Island Records called "The Sound of Deep Ellum." Now I'll have to find it when I get home.

Man, I remember the day. Deep Ellum was like Sixth Street in Austin. Very hip place to hang out.
Great photos, as usual Chip!

All those photos were taken with the iPhone 4S and I used a free app called Instagram to apply the filter.

I guess the only one to survive was 6th street? I went to D.E. with friends in 75 ....very hip place then.

When you go down to Deep Ellum put your money in your socks
the redheads in Deep Ellum, they'll put you on the rocks

Once I knew a preacher, preached the Bible through and through...
Went down to Deep Ellum, now his preaching days are through
