Patek Philippe 5396R-012 and 5712R-001
All,
I would welcome any thoughts on my choice between the two! Thanks |

I think the 5396 is one of the best modern pateks and I don’t love the nautilus on a strap. So it’s an easy choice for me.

IMO a dress watch is best in a precious metal case with a leather strap and a sports watch is best in a SS case with a SS bracelet.
However both of these are great watches and I would get the watch that really appeals to you. |

Agree with the above. 5396r-012 first. If you still have a hankering for a 5712, I then would save towards a 5712/1a. That is a great dynamic duo.

My favorite Nautilus is 5712R ( like it any metal as well) , and my favorite AC are 5146P and 5396G.
I just saw a 5396g listed by one of the 5 biggest sellers on the forum for 29k , kind of low. I think the 5712R has better market. But at the end , I think you have know if you are looking more for a dressy watch or a Power watch . If you want the former go 5396 If you want the latter go 5712R Cheers

Given that I do not wear a suit on a daily basis, though I do wear one reasonable frequently, I was wondering if the 5712R would be suitable for 'double-duty' as a dress and more casual watch?

I’d say yes. Any nautilus would go with a suit. TS wears a 5164a with a suit even.

You have to ask yourself if you want a dress + casual watch or a sport watch......
Out of those 2 choice..... For me it would be Petek 5396R.... And if it sport watch I go with SS Rolex.....

The 5396R-012 is absolutely gorgeous and, since it's next on my own list, it gets my enthusiastic vote.

i faced the same decision exactly and went for the 5712R in a heartbeat, it is a very versatile watch and my favorite annual calendar is - after long deliberations with myself - the 5235G. all that said, the 5396R-012 is a great looking watch, particularly with the breguet numerals.

One issue that I am considering is the relative width of the strap at the lugs, which is 21mm in the case of the 5496R and 25mm for the 5712R. I wonder if the wider strap of the 5712R makes it unsuitable for formal attire? |

I have made some initial enquiries on the 5712R from various ADs; supply is very limited (several report only receiving a single piece per annum) and waiting lists are very long (three to five years). A number of ADs mentioned that they are expecting the piece to be discontinued, perhaps as soon as next year, given the reduction in supply, whilst they have seen demand grow exponentially as the price of the steel Nautilus variants has traded up to a similar price point. This definitely plays to the 5396R's favour! |
