Hard Choices.... and wait

I am in a “big” dilemma at the moment, I am a big fan of the 5980/1R. However, right now I have only a 55K budget that I can spare, which would get me a 5711/1R but I dont really like 5711 because its too thin for my liking.

But with my current budget I can afford two watches that I like, the daydate 40 and RO 15450OR just dont adore them like I do the 5980/1R.

Should I wait and save up to buy the 5980/1R which would take me a few months or just go with the other 2 watches that I like instead? I would love to hear some opinions. I currently only have a gold daytona(is variety/quantity really important?)

FYI- I am only 21 and go to college(I earn from joint business with my mom)

Save to get what you want. Keep in mind buying a sport model Patek is a totally different situation than buying a Day-Date or AP. I would discuss with your local Patek AD on when they would have one on hand for purchase and possibility negotiation of a price discount since it's precious metal.

I would wait and get the one you like the most. The 5980/1r is my favorite out of the choices that you listed.

In the long run is cheaper to save and wait, buy what you want .

Thanks for all the replies, I am probably going to wait. I just had the concern that I will just have two watches in my collection but buying the other 2 would give me more variety. Now I am convinced that buying the right one is more important.

Variety is not important. Wait and get the 5980/1r if that’s your goal.

Why not get the 5980/1a which is well within your budget?

I have learned pretty quickly that when it comes to watch collecting and using the word budget in the same sentence it is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. It just doesn't work. How did I get into this!

I tried on a 5980/1a but it was just too light for 50k, i like the weight on gold watches.

Get what you like, because you will end up getting it later and it will cost you more.
Also check out the ROC RG. Absolutely gorgeous!

Wait. From experience what ends up happening if you don't wait is that you buy the AP and Rolex now and sell them at a loss later to get the PP.

Wait. (Yes, I'm repeating that).

Why not order the 5980 now.

You're said you're only a few months away from having the funds. It might take that long to bring one in

Yes, mine took two months to get, when I ordered I was the second on the list and the guy before me passed...so might take even longer. By the time I picked it up 6 more people had ordered.

Part of it is age and why i'm asking.... am curious if you're active or live a sedentary lifestyle. Since i tend to be very active, the durability of Pateks seems to be more for those with a casual, relaxed lifestyle. So the question is, how do you plan to 'live with' your mechanical timepieces? Is it just for award ceremonies and appearing on fashion camera/selfies, or are you active in sports and enjoy a moving lifestyle?

I wish I was disciplined as you at age 21.
All the credit to you

With that said, I would save up for the 5980/1R.
It will be that much more rewarding IMO.

Save and wait. I'm always in the camp of just waiting for what you want outright - as I've frequently gone for my second choice, but keep pining for my first choice, and it ends up being more expensive having to flip.

I don't get this?

Age and being active/sedentary doesn't really necessary follow one way or the other. Plenty of people older than me are much fitter than I am - and I am considered incredibly active for my age group. I own "delicate" pieces like the 15202, and have other pieces for when I'm more active (or I don't wear a watch at all.)

You mean you don't wear your mechanical watch only for award ceremonies?

100% agree. Have seen some 60-somethings who are extremely active and outgoing. Have also seen teen to early 20-somethings who stay at home and play vid games / program / code all the time. So yes, all generalizations are 'wrong' of course. As he is young, agree one may want to factor in how delicate / durable a mechanical timepiece is.

Personally, was a young coder so was basically typing and traveling to many worldwide high-end luxury events, so a Patek was great. Decades later have moved on to water sports, cars/track, etc and thus something more durable is a better choice. So yes, young Patek was fine for me, yet now decades later need something far more durable due to chosen activities. So again, you are right tng11. My bad

Patience and delayed gratification are tough traits to harness for someone at 21 year old, although that can apply to people at any age. But as others have mentioned, saving up and waiting a few months will be rewarding in the long run!

Beat of luck!

I only wear them while going out to the opera. Though that can be a dangerous proposition - apparently clapping too hard can also damage a Patek.

I appreciate everyone’s opinions on the topic, thank you for the help on pushing me to wait.

I have an active lifestyle, I still attend college and also have to travel often to see our factory locations to check on the how the work is going. But i dont do any physical activity by myself so it really doesnt matter that much whatever watch I am wearing, I just love and have passion for beautiful watches like the 5980.

The only real physical activity I do is go to the gym, where I dont usually wear a watch.

You wear your Patek? I take mine out the bubble wrap from the safe and take a selfie and quickly put them back before oxidation sets in!

(Friendly fun humor)

Wow, the first fast reading through that i saw an F instead of a Cl and then apping.

Guess it all depends on how much you're in love with your watch.
