Why do panerai fanatics think they are such great watches?

They are junk period.
I have owned 2 and both seem like overpriced inviktas to me

Because they are simple in design and are huge (2 reasons I dont like them). Panerai fans like their Panerais just like Rolex guys like their Rolexes.

To me, every Panerai model looks the same... very much like to the average guy, the GMT, Submariner, SD, DSSD etc all look the same.

I bought my Panerai PAM 90 in 2003 because they weren't popular and had a unique look. I didn't even look at the Rolex brand due to the huge number (real and fake) I see daily. Since that time Panerai has started making their own movements and while much more popular than in '03, they are still less common than a Rolex.

That being said, I just bought a Rolex (Milgauss GV) for my dad because the brand is more well known, which I think will add to his satisfaction.

Just my $0.02.

I had couple of PAMs and reached the conclusion that it was too big for my small wrists. Which is why I think the Deep Sea is a crazy watch as well. But, to each his own.

Personally I think they are too big and overpriced for what they are,

But I would not call them junk by any means.

I find them a fad item. The huge, tank-like case is very representative of current watch trends. However, they are shifting more towards manufacture movements (as ETA tightens up who they'll sell what to). That said, a mechanical device built in Italy, designed for use by the Italian military doesn't exactly scream "precise and reliable."

I really dislike statements like the OP. There is no reason to trash someone elses watch or watch preferences. Panerais are not junk, not by a long shot. They make a solid well made watch with a unique look and bold styling. I have owned a PAM 111 and thought it was a great watch, but I eventually sold it. Not because it was junk, but because something else beckoned. I used to think that the Sub was overpriced, but I came here with an open mind and am now considering purchasing one, to keep my Deepsea company.

Although i dont i own one, i think they are far from being junk & always enjoy looking at them in the flesh.
For me, they are a little too big.

I like how they offer something different i.e. sandwich dials, upside down cyclops, unique flip crown, titanium. Not to mention different functions - rattrapante, flyback, depth gauge...

Dont think your statement was called for. Panerai make some very good watches like many other brands.And in future if you have nothing good to say about any particular brand keep your opinion to yourself this is a warning.And dont forget ETA movements are all in-house built and movements like the Unitas 6497/8 have powered many a high end brand for 40 plus years .A real workhouse movement, and in every Rolex for the past 4 decades there has been a little bit of ETA inside with the escapement parts,

I was a "Rolex Geek" before, but now look at me. I'm trasform, and I'm so proud of mine today.
I had almost all Rolex sport models except Yacth Master, Daytona & Explorer 1.
I never satisfied, I don't know why. Bought flipped, bought flipped.
Now the only Rolex lefts are Date 1500 (Grandpa Rolex), DateJust 16233 (my Oldman watch) & Sub ND COSC.
Oh yeah, and I'm planning to flip my Sub ND for another PAM...

P.S : I'm still respectful with Rolex.

Ignorance... Do you have any clue how many companies use ETA movements in some of their watches? I guess IWC makes a bunch of junk watches, I guess Tudor watches are junk etc etc....

Dont forget many high end manufactures use ETA movements including Patek in $100k + pieces. Are they junk too?

Like any watch brand, some will like them some will not. Panerai are one of those brands you understand or you don't, i dont think the poster should be shot down in flames because they don't like them, maybe the choice of words was a little strong but come on guys rise above it.

I am a Panerai owner, an 88 a 119 and soon to be 121. I get the brand but i can understand why they have a die hard following but i can ot understand an AP royal Oak and many of my friends love them, they bring out one every time there is an insignificant event somewhere that they are remotely conected to nd for me they are Ugly over priced watches for over paid celbs, just my view.

The point is we can't all share the same veiws can we! even if some people put those views across in a slightly strongly worded way

PS: Not sure the mods should start issuing warnings becuase someone shares a different opinion however strongly worded, seems a little oppresive to me. Just my 2 pennies.

Panerai got their big start with Rolex in the 1930's..

As an Italian Government owned company, Rolex made the movements for them and assembled the final watch before being returned to the Italian Govt for issue to their Navy...

Today, they are gearing up to make their own in-house movements..

While I don't particularly like the look and size, or the price........... They are far from junk...

Well like many here, I own both Rolex and PAM watches (and others) but these are the 2 brands are the ones I like most. No need to say why I like Rolex as this is a rolex forum but for PAM, the brand consistency across the entire range is admired. I mean, you can't mistake a PAM (unless it's a replica or hommage) for other brands and as a "jewellery" watch, it shouts louder than most brands. But the fun part is the strap changing - it makes owning a PAM so much more fun!

I had 2 panerai's one had a flaw in the crystal and the luminor was like wearing a wood block on my wrist.

And the oem straps are horrible

Not trying to piss anybody off
I just don't care for there build quality

fine junk was a little harsh
They do seem to hold there value

Panerai makes some pretty good watches. Simple in design, very good looking and pretty reliable. I somehow like variety in my collection and have tried to mix my watches, by buying different brands, rather than sticking to one brand.

Current collection is Breitling Bentley GT, Panerai 176 K, Ferrari 1, Rolex 16610and IWC Portuguese 3714-01. Thinking of replacing 16610 with 16613 and adding SS-Platinum Yatchmaster to the collection, if I can swing it.

Having owned these, Pam remains one of my favorites. Read a comment about bad quality of their straps earlier in this thread. Their OEM alligator straps are amazing quality and are second to none!
