Onyx dial day date 18238 guidance
Good evening ladies and gentlemen first time poster long time member I ran into a small dilemma lately just to let you all know it’s not my first rodeo I own several Rolex watches starting with a Rolex president Rolex submariner Rolex yacht Master and a Rolex date just the gentleman that services my watches has a friend from out of state that is selling a Rolex 18238 black onyx dial freshly serviced for sale. The watchmaker is offering me this watch for $8300 cash which I think is a steal I’ve spoken to him and asked him about a bill of sale and he said of course I will provide you with one with the sellers name and the watchmaker and I will sign it....this deal sounds too good to be true...can yal advise me on what things I should be looking out for? My concerns are the watch being stolen or being sold a fake...this is a side deal from where he works he is a certified Rolex tech any advice would be great

Sounds interesting- did your watchmaker do the recent service? Does it come with the bracelet? Can you inspect or have a return privilege? I’m sure you are thinking all these and more.
I think if all is in order it would be a great deal. I’d do it in a heartbeat after some due diligence. Maybe post pictures here. You’ll definitely get additional comments. |

Ladies and gentlemen the watch does come with its bracelet my watchmaker did service the watch and it’s giving me the full warranty that comes with it it’s just not through his store because they’re at his store they’re certified a Rolex dealer but he’s given me the insurance so if anything goes wrong with the watch he will fix it also he’s given me a receipt with the serial number on it the model number on it the owners name and he’s going to sign it as well unfortunately I can’t post any pictures right now because he has the watch

The black onyx dials normally bring a premium but are prone to cracking. I'd check to make sure that the dial is original and free from any cracks. Also check the bracelet to ensure it hasn't had the bracelet sections replaced by Italian 18k replicas. There should be 8 screws in the bracelet for it to be complete - if it is short any links, they can cost $200 on up in the USA.

Onyx dial day date 18238 guidance
As others have said, check condition/originality of bracelet, case, dial etc. However, not everyone (including a watchmaker) knows that onyx dials are bringing the type of premium that they do. Knowledge is power.

I truly wonder how so many people can give advice here withOUT even seeing photos.
Darn! Its tough enough to give sound advice with photos without - is just crazy! We should say to OP. Post photos! End Adam

the fact he's a certified tech and you know where s/he works is a def plus.
you're effectively getting it for $7500 if it was really fully serviced too. if enough links are there with the OEM band (many have aftermarket 18K) and its kosher, i say take a chance but get ALL the sellers details in email and make the deal at their place of work. DL#, full name, legtimate ph#, etc... don't make it too easy for the seller. how they reply to some generally acceptable asks will say more about the overall risk. good luck. |
