Yacht-Master Blue Dial 116622 or GMT Master II 116710LN

Hi all,

I am looking to purchase my first Rolex watch and I am looking at the Yacht-Master (blue dial) and GMT Master II (black dial).

In the AD I visited recently I was told that the GMT would hold its value better as it is a more sought after, would this be correct?

Does anyone have an preference to one or the other based on something other than personal preference?

Considering the Yachtmaster was £2k more expensive, I was surprised that the AD was suggesting the GMT to be the better purchase.

Thanks.

Despite having been in the same situation of choosing my first Rolex, a Steel Everose Yachtmaster II - which I chose over a GMT (or daytona), like yourself.

The GMT is a classic.... Any collection just needs one. So much so that I just need one myself too...

IMHO it is 'THE' GMT king of all other dual time watches....

Looking back I may have wore the GMT much more than my Yachtmaster II which does draw lots of attention.

GMT the most 'sensible' choice, but go with the one that appeals to you most.

The reason why the GMTIIc holds more value is because the platinum bezel on the YM once scratched is very expensive to repair and even more to replace hence they depreciate a lot on the second hand market.
I use to have the GMTIIc and can say it ticks a lot of boxes - dual time functionality, super maxi case (much more prescence then the YM) and love it or hate it PCLs.

But having said all that go with the one that sings the most to you!

It is true the GMT has a slightly higher resale value. Personally I would buy a preowned yachtmaster blue pver the GMT.

It really comes down to taste. I personally would rather have the YM if it's SS YM vs SS GMT LN. Now if it's the SS YM vs the SS BLNR GMT, I'd probably go with the BLNR.

As far as resale value, unless you're planning on flipping it, it's fairly irrelevant, but the BLNR currently has the better second hand value as far as I've seen on TRF.

GMT for sure. It's classic and you won't tire of it.

Probably correct, at least at this time. However, popular tastes do change. It is possible that so many GMTs e and havwill be sold that the relatively uncommon YM may become tomorrow's collector item; who can really say?

Anyway, I don't see this consideration as very important. Frankly, if value-holding is a substantial concern you'd probably do better off buying a cheap Casio and putting the balance of a Rolex purchase price into an index fund.

Personal preference is the be-all and end-all, IMO. Life is too short to be worrying about the taste of strangers!

I love the GMT, so that would be my choice.

However, I guess it would depend what else is in your collection. If you're just starting out, then definitely the GMT and add a niche piece like the YM down the road.

GMT II, presently, will hold its value more than, IMHO underrated, YM specially the one with the blue dial (which I love).

Now it's a matter of why's. Are You buying it as an investment? GMT then, unless You think the collectors will go on a craze for the blue dial YM in the future if its in mint condition!

If it's for Your enjoyment... Pick the one You love and, if ever, You intend to sell it afterwards worry then and not now.
