WOW! Probably similar odds as winning Power Ball. But Power Ball is worth a hundred million. I've been thinking lately about whether or not there may be any Rolexes on the bottom of the ocean and what kind of condition they'd be in when subjected to such salinated water and in some places depth pressure. Probably as easy to find one on the ocean floor as it is to find a $10 5512 at a flea market. Did they still have gilt dials in 1968?

Thankfully, the story ended with this:

Update: We've heard back from Kyle, who elected not to have the watch serviced by Rolex.

He must have got a heads up from somewhere...good for him.

For 7.99. Not the value of a 5512. But happens every day :)

Right you are!
I was screaming (in my head) as I read, the story saying Rolex was restoring it. That is, until I read that postscript you quoted.

Another curious it’s - how did Kyle get access to the Rolex serial number index to discover it was a 5512? Maybe the story has a fact twisted because only the RSC would be able to do that.

If he knows enough to report the watch story to Hodinkee he's probably a WIS.

Sure - but no WIS has access to Rolex’s s/n database online. Nor do AD’s, nor do watchmakers with parts accounts.

The article led me to my question due to this quote:
“Once he got the watch home, however, he took the bracelet off and searched for the serial number online. Lo and behold, it came back as a 5512 dating from 1968.”

Only the RSC and HQ have that data online.

Perhaps it’s just a case of muddy writing and should have said the case was engraved with a 5512 reference number, and the serial number appeared to be approximately 1968 according to informal online resources.

Sorry, but I don't see why he needs access to the Rolex database to identify the model of this watch. If it has a 4-line dial and is marked on the mid case as a 5512, that should be pretty good assumption.

Now the date could be off slightly (the bracelet is definitely off a later watch) but the only other option I can see is if it is a 5513 with hard to read engraving and an incorrect 4-line dial?

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm hardly and expert on these things..

I’m not saying you’re wrong - but did you see where the article gave the impression Kyle had determined it was a 5512 from 1968 by looking up the serial number online?

We know the reference number is on the midcases - it’s just sloppy writing in the article - and the self-regulated s/n lists are approximations for date of sale.

This is was one of my first thoughts when I read the story earlier, but thinking about it now, the seller could end up doing something unscrupulous if the buyer ever came back to them (i.e. claiming it was stolen, etc.). Lucky guy though.

Just wondering why not to have Rolex SERVICE it? I understand why he didn’t want it refinished, dial changed, etc. each time I’ve sent to RSC they send me an itemized suggestion list of things to do which I can opt for/against. Shouldn’t a simple service just lubricate and clean the movement which is all positive?
