Hey all,

I recently purchased an automatic watch from a reputable 2nd hand dealer.When it arrived it seemed to be working perfectly and keeping great time. To be sure of its authenticity I took it to my local watchmaker, and he opened the back and confirmed the movement was real and original. Within an hour of him checking it out the watch completely died, as in it won't beat at all or start to keep time, even after winding it and wearing it. I've had automatics keep poor time but never stop completely and be unable to start again!! Does anyone know what could be the issue at hand? Did the watchmaker perhaps accidental upset the rotor or something? The dealer says the watch was serviced before he sent so it shouldn't need one already plus I've just never seen an auto act so bizarrely. Any insight would be appreciated!

I'd say it is most likely related to the watchmaker and his procedure. It could be something as simple as a small piece of debris in the movement. Regardless, I'd take it back and have him (or someone else) take a look... It was within an hour so it's pretty easy to come to this conclusion. Take it back sooner rather than later - the longer you wait, the more easily fault can be reflected to you.

Not sure I get the question. Watches are machines and like all machines stop working occasionally. That's why there are watchmakers and repair shops. The RSC does more than clean and polish watches, they fix broken ones too.

I'd take it to a reputable watchmaker and have it looked at.

Had a 'mystery problem' with an auto ETA movement once - would run for an hour or so then stop. Could restart it, but would do the same again. I won't mention any names at all, but 4 attempts to fix it failed. In the end the entire movement was replaced, much to the credit of a certain company

sounds odd that it was an hour after it was open , but coincidence ,,, maybe.

As it was opened I guess some small part was misaligned or got stucked on the movement..

Thats probably why it was for sale in the first place, old owner knew it had that problem and sold it or traded it to the store without telling anyone!

People do that with cars all the time

My Polar Exp II died on me last year with literally one month left on the factory warranty. RSC performed an overhaul and it was back up to snuff in no time. Happens to the best of 'em, it was NOS when I got it and oils had probably dried up somewhat, no gripes on this end.
