Best place in to world to buy a submariner
I am an airline pilot who flies internationally. Thus, I have the opportunity to go pretty much anywhere to pick up a watch. I am interested in a stainless submariner. I would prefer new if the price is right, but am not opposed to pre-owned. I am also not opposed to grey market. In short, I'm looking for a great deal, and am willing to travel to get it!
I also live near NYC, so if anyone has any recommendations there, they'd be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice. |

I would normally say new from an AD, however given the fact that the main emphasis is on a great deal and you're not fussed on a used/grey market supplied model - perhaps try one of the trusted sellers here on this forum.

I would recommend one of the guys here. I have purchased a few watches from the listings here. I recommend DavidSW and you can PM me if you want the name and # of a good AD I deal with that will discount for you.

You are a pilot and you want a Submariner?
I would have thought a GMT and there are several on here for sale. You could find one who lives near a future destination on here easy enough! |

Not only are the best deals in the US, the customs hassle and legalities of importing a Rolex aren't worth it.
Trusted dealers here for the win!

I do like the GMT, but I think I like the submariner a bit more! I also dive, so maybe that's it!
Thanks for the replies. |

As others have said, buying here is the way to go. I have bought from Tempoking and everything went great.

You can get a NIB one here with the papers in your name for 10% off. As you can at a dealer if you are a half-decent negotiator. That is about as good as it is going to get unless you are a repeat customer wiht a long-standing relationship with an AD. That is just the way it is - so just stop fretting over $100 or $200 here or there in an additonal discount, buy the watch and enjoy it thoroughly! :-)

Trusted sellers here get you a great price and no sales tax, it's the only way to fly! (pun intended)

Yeah, and once you try on the BLNR it'll be a tough decision. :-)

The GMT surely would suit you. Can't really make a mistake with either. Good luck

Wow. I must be easily influenced. Now I'm leaning towards the GMT. Also think if I do buy one, I'd buy from DavidSW. Thanks all!

I thought with you flying the 2nd time zone hand would be more useful on a GMT than a 20 minute dive bezel and a 300 metre dive limit on the Submariner. The new black/blue GMT is lovely. |

If I'm ever 100 meters down, something has gone drastically wrong, and I'm pretty sure my watch will be the last thing on my mind!
The second time zone would be nice, but I think I'm leaning more towards the fact that it seems a bit less common, and the aviation link (Pan Am) is pretty cool. I like the black/blue - just not sure that I like it $1,000 more! |

Here in the UK there are plenty of black/blue in the Rolex shop windows and there is one being sold on the forum here but you should not be paying over list for it now.
I would think there are plenty in the US Rolex dealers as well now. I would get the black one and maybe change it for a blue/black in the future if you still like them. The black one is closer to the 'Sub look' you originally thought about too. |

If you are ever in Tokyo ther are some great watch shops here like Jackroads where you can find everything from vintage to modern. GMT's are an awesome watch I own two and love them both.

That extra $1,000 for the BLNR amortized over the life of the watch is negligible. I say GO FOR IT!

.
The following chart shows you the prices of Sub and GMT models in various countries, converted in US dollars from their actual list prices in those countries. Knowing that all these prices are accounted tax included except in the US and Canada (tax % indicated in line 3), you'll see that the best place to buy a Rolex actually is Japan followed by HongKong. |

Canada if customs is not an issue and you are buying used or from Grey dealers . Prices in Canada are consistently below US used and grey dealer prices. When I buy from Canadian grey dealers or private sellers here on TRF they are generally below best US TRF sellers prices and if you take exchange rates into account even better bargains. AD's prices US vs Canada no idea.
